A coin which was first found among loose change in a piggy bank has sold for a whopping £750 at auction.

The 2p, which was noticed to be unusual as it was silver colour, went under the hammer at RWB Auctions in Royal Wootton Bassett, on Tuesday, April 23.

Testing has confirmed that the coin was mistakenly made from cupronickel - the same alloy used for 5ps and 10ps - and it's also believed that several more like this are still out there.

The 2p coin was first discovered in the late 1990s by a local resident, who noticed it was a silver colour unlike the standard bronze and kept it as a curiosity.

Later, in 2025, the owner noticed a similar coin being sold at auction and contacted RWB Auctions about selling the coin.

Experts at the auction house initially valued the coin at £300-400, but it went on to sell for an incredible sum of £750.

Another lot which shocked bidders at the sale was a set of rare Isle of Man 10p 'trial coins'.

The coins were described by experts at RWB Auctions as "extremely rare", and it was a huge surprise when five of them were collected together in Royal Wootton Bassett.

The last time a set of Isle of Man 10p trial coins appeared at auction in the UK was in July 2021 - so it's not something that happens every day.
