On May 7, Grayscale, a leading cryptocurrency asset manager, filed a notice of withdrawal for the Grayscale Ethereum Futures Trust with the SEC. The SEC had initially scheduled May 30 as the date for its final decision on Grayscale's Ether futures ETF.

Bloomberg ETF analyst James Seyffart had previously suggested that Grayscale may have sought to strategically employ the Ether futures ETF as a "trojan horse" to pressure the SEC into approving a spot Ether ETF.

Notably, May 23 looms as the decision date for several applications, including those submitted by VanEck, ARK 21Shares, and Hashdex.

Nonetheless, SEC Chair Gary Gensler indicated in a May 7 interview with CNBC that the SEC remains engaged in deliberations regarding spot Ether ETFs.

Grayscale's withdrawal adds to a complex regulatory landscape for cryptocurrency ETFs. Many industry experts anticipate the SEC will ultimately adopt a similar approach to spot Ether ETF approvals as it did with spot Bitcoin ETFs in January, potentially impacting all or most pending applications.

However, Gensler has declined to provide explicit guidance on Ether's regulatory status, leaving the industry in anticipation of forthcoming SEC decisions.
