Senator Warren Pushes the U.S. Senate to Pause a Vote on the GENIUS Act

Senator Elizabeth Warren is urging a pause on the U.S. Senate vote on the GENIUS Act, a major proposed legislation for regulating stablecoins.

Her call follows reports of a large partnership involving World Liberty Financial, a firm linked to the Trump family, and an investment group from the United Arab Emirates. Senator Warren expressed concern over the bill’s timing and potential to benefit a politically connected stablecoin issuer.

"The Trump family's stablecoin is now 7th largest in the world thanks to a shady crypto deal with the United Arab Emirates—a foreign government that will be pouring a huge sum of money into the Trump family's company," Senator Warren wrote on X, formerly Twitter.

"The Senate shouldn't pass a crypto bill this week to facilitate this kind of corruption."

The Trump family stablecoin is being used by MGX, an investment firm being backed by Mubadala, the Abu Dhabi-based sovereign wealth fund, and artificial intelligence company G42, to invest in Binance, according to a report by Bloomberg.

Senator Warren further highlighted this deal, labeling it a “shady crypto deal with the United Arab Emirates.” She alleges the Trump family could be financially benefitting through the USD1 stablecoin and argues the GENIUS Act’s timing might facilitate foreign-influenced profits.

"The good news is that this new crypto bill does not yet have enough votes to pass. And we have time to stop it. But we need to act fast," Senator Warren added.

The GENIUS Act, an acronym for Guiding and Establishing National Innovation for US Stablecoins, was initially reported to have support from both parties and both Houses of Congress.

However, the legislation has hit a snag as Democrats are raising concerns over its protections against foreign partnerships and money laundering risks. Senator Warren, along with nine other Senate Democrats, penned a letter to the leadership of the Senate Banking and Housing Committee, expressing these worries.

Moreover, an update to the bill by Republican lawmakers reportedly saw some safeguards being rolled back, further fueling the discussion.

The installment of new leadership at the committee, with Senator Tim Scott now in charge after the departure of Senator Sherill Banks, is also expected to delay the bill’s progress.

As the debate continues and the clock ticks down on the month, the fate of the GENIUS Act hangs in the balance. Will the bill be brought to a vote before the month's end, or will it be tabled amid the mounting opposition and technical hitches?

Only time will tell how this crucial piece of cryptocurrency legislation will unfold in the coming weeks.
