Building Tools Nobody Notices (But Everyone Needs)

Apr 07, 2026 at 01:02 pm TRXL Podcast

The most valuable work in AEC technology often isn't new software or AI. It's making sure project names match across two platforms — and nobody knows you did it. -------- In this episode, we trace the arc of Charles Portelli, FAIA — Associate and Digital Innovation Strategist at Perkins&Will — through a career that ran from computational design at KPF, to product manager at a Google X spinout, to running a structural interoperability startup solo, to building internal tools for one of the world's largest architecture firms. Digital practice leaders in AEC occupy a specific tension: deep enough in technology to see what's possible, but working inside institutions where the most critical problems are invisible. The data infrastructure, the project naming consistency, the spec kickoff automation — none of it makes headlines. But when it breaks, that's where the lawsuit comes from. And none of the AI-powered workflows anyone is pitching work without it being solid first. What makes Charlie's story different is the full arc. He left architecture deliberately — for a startup where he was the only architect on a team of engineers — and that outsider clarity became his edge. He learned to translate between design thinking and software thinking, learned what product management gets right that project management misses, then brought all of it back inside a firm with 2,800 architects and started building from the foundation up. This conversation is essential for design technology leaders, digital practice directors, and anyone building internal tools inside a large architecture or engineering firm. What you'll learn in this episode: • Why "think slower to move faster" applies to building internal AEC tools — and why rushing infrastructure costs more than it saves • How being the only architect in a room of software engineers became a career advantage, not a liability • What product management thinking gets right about prioritization that architectural project management misses • Why the highest-ROI work in a technology group is often the least visible — and how to make that case to leadership • How a RAG-based AI project assistant could transform how junior staff get answers on a job, and what data plumbing has to happen first • Why the AIA College of Fellows needs a technology category, and what it means that computational designers are only now earning their way in Chapters: 0:00 Intro 2:40 Charlie's Early Career & Digital Roots 8:20 Think Slower to Move Faster 9:00 KPF & Building Curved Skyscrapers 9:50 Chair Fabrication: Code-to-Machine 18:20 Joining the Flux Startup 24:40 Being the Only Architect in the Room 28:10 Becoming a Product Manager at Flux 30:10 Konstru & Structural Interoperability 38:00 Running a Startup Solo at Thornton Tomasetti 42:30 TT's Startup Incubator Model 49:10 Back to Architecture at Perkins&Will 52:20 Product Management vs. Project Management 1:03:00 Building Internal Tools for a Large Firm 1:09:20 Surfacing Friction: Listening at Scale 1:17:30 The AI Project Assistant Vision 1:35:00 Earning FAIA as a Technologist 1:48:00 Making Space for Digital Practice Leaders 👍 Like this episode if you've ever had to explain why data infrastructure matters before an AI tool can work 💬 Drop a comment with the most unglamorous, high-value problem your team has solved 🔔 Subscribe for more conversations on architecture and technology 🌐 Explore more at https://trxl.co #AECtech #ComputationalDesign #DigitalPractice #ArchitectureLeadership #FAIA #DesignTechnology #AEC ----- Episode Sponsors AVAIL AVAIL's content management system (CMS) simplifies access to your firm's content in one easy-to-use platform.
