Alexander's Coin | The first coin in the world was created by the King of Lydia

May 25, 2025 at 03:01 am DF_DifferentFacts

Starting with the Lydian kings and culminating in the era of Alexander the Great. The Lydians, in what is now western Turkey, are widely credited with minting the world’s first coins in the 6th century BCE. These early coins, made of electrum, served not only as a standardized medium of exchange but also as a way for rulers to assert authority and control over expanding economies and territories. As coinage spread throughout the ancient world, it quickly became a powerful form of state propaganda. Rulers recognized the opportunity to imprint their image, symbols, and messages onto coins, ensuring their presence was felt in every transaction. This was particularly effective in an age when literacy was limited and coins were among the few objects regularly seen by people from all walks of life.
