This ultra-rare penny coin could make you rich as it's worth an eye-watering £140k

TikTok users are being urged to check their old pre-decimal pennies after one ultra-rare version was discovered to be worth a whopping £140,000.

The rare coin was minted in celebration of the reign of King Edward VIII, however, the plans were abandoned in December 1936 following the abdication of the royal to marry American divorcee Wallace Simpson.

This coin was one of around 50 that were produced to evaluate the design. Now what you need to do is search your old pre-decimal pennies for any from the year 1937 when you find a 1937 this doesn't mean you found the 'super rare' version.

What you need to do is check the obverse side of the coin also known as the head side. If your coin has King Edward VIII, then yes you have found an ultra-rare version and can easily sell this coin for £140,000.

But if you don't find the coin with the King on your penny, then unfortunately it's not rare or valuable.

Since the video was shared, it garnered nearly 500 likes and dozens of comments.

One said: "I have."

While another added: "How much is it exactly worth?"

Looking for more rare coins? Previously, the "rarest" 50p coin in circulation hit headlines as collectors scramble to get their claws on the scarce design.

The same TikTok user turned his attention to the Atlantic Salmon 50p which was released as part of the national celebrations to mark King Charles III's Coronation in 2023.

He said: "With only 200,000 of these, this is an exciting day for coin collecting. It takes the crown from the all-mighty Kew Gardens 50p coin which held the title for the past 15 years.

"This coin has now officially dethroned the Kew Gardens 50p, which had a mintage of 210,000 when it first came out in 2009." He also mentioned how the Atlantic Salmon 50p is currently the top dog among 50p pieces in terms of demand.
