TON Soars Amid Telegram Integration, Reigniting Dreams of a Crypto Super App

Apr 30, 2024 at 01:20 pm

TON, a cryptocurrency associated with the Telegram messenger service, has experienced a surge in value due to investor optimism about its integration with Telegram's vast user base. With Telegram's endorsement and the addition of Tether tokens on its blockchain, the TON token has soared, making it one of the top 10 cryptocurrencies by market capitalization. Investors are drawn by the potential of "super apps" that combine social media and financial services, making TON an appealing investment amidst the broader revival in alternative cryptocurrencies.

TON Surges Amidst Telegram Integration, Reigniting Hopes for a Cryptocurrency Super App

In the dynamic realm of cryptocurrencies, TON has emerged as a beacon of growth, captivating the attention of investors with its skyrocketing value and its promising integration with the sprawling Telegram messenger service. Backed by the endorsement of Telegram's massive user base, TON has embarked on a meteoric rise, fueling aspirations for a transformative super app that seamlessly blends finance, social media, and everyday transactions.

Telegram's embrace of TON as its "official Web3 infrastructure" has ignited a surge of optimism within the cryptocurrency community. With an estimated 900 million active users, Telegram possesses an unparalleled reach that could potentially propel TON to mainstream adoption. The recent announcement that Tether tokens will be integrated into the TON blockchain further cements its position as a versatile platform for digital asset transactions and stablecoin transfers.

Market data reveals the remarkable ascent of the TON token, which has soared from approximately $2.21 a year ago to as high as $7.63 on April 11, 2023. This impressive growth has catapulted TON into the top 10 largest cryptocurrencies by market capitalization, trailing only the enigmatic memecoin Dogecoin.

The allure of a "super app" or "everything app" has long tantalized investors, who envision a seamless convergence of payments, shopping, social media, and messaging services. WeChat, a Chinese tech titan, serves as a prime example of the potential for such platforms, offering a comprehensive suite of services that has become indispensable to its vast user base. Within the cryptocurrency realm, this concept is often referred to as "SocialFi," a portmanteau of social finance.

Elon Musk's acquisition of Twitter in 2022 reflected the burgeoning interest in super apps. Binance, a leading cryptocurrency exchange, played a pivotal role in financing the buyout and expressed its intention to explore the integration of cryptocurrencies into the platform. Revolut, a UK-based financial services company, has taken a complementary approach, evolving from a purely financial app to one that incorporates social networking features.

While TON's appeal is undoubtedly intertwined with the broader enthusiasm for super apps, its resurgence has also been fueled by a general revival in the altcoin market, according to Thomas Peuch, CEO of Indigo, a digital asset hedge fund.

"TON has outperformed many of its peers as investors have flocked to the project amidst renewed interest in altcoins and thanks to Telegram's backing," Peuch said. He added that Indigo has been actively trading the TON token.

TON, an acronym for "The Open Network," has established a foothold within Telegram with its integrated crypto wallet, boasting over 6 million monthly users.

The Shadow of Libra

Previous attempts to introduce crypto payments into social media have encountered significant roadblocks. Facebook, now Meta, abandoned its "Libra" cryptocurrency project following staunch opposition from regulators worldwide, who harbored concerns over potential risks to financial stability and erosion of control over monetary policy.

"Telegram's recent venture into crypto payments introduces a novel use case for the app, but its widespread adoption remains in its nascent stages," said Robert Le, senior analyst at PitchBook. Le notes that venture capital interest in SocialFi has surged, but acknowledges the challenges of shifting user perceptions in non-Asian markets, where messaging apps are predominantly viewed as communication tools rather than multifunctional platforms.

Ram Gopal, a professor at Warwick Business School, highlights the "regulatory, technical, and security challenges" inherent in such integrations.

"Regulators may scrutinize how these platforms comply with existing financial regulations," he said. "Ensuring user protection against scams, fraud, and potential losses due to cryptocurrency volatility is paramount."

TON's Genesis and Evolution

Telegram Messenger initiated the development of TON's blockchain in 2018 and raised a staggering $1.7 billion through the sale of the associated cryptocurrency. However, the project faced legal challenges from the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), which alleged violations of federal securities laws in the token sale.

In 2020, Telegram reached a settlement with the SEC, agreeing to discontinue the development of TON. The company neither admitted nor denied the SEC's accusations.

Undeterred, a group of independent developers took up the mantle, continuing the project from where Telegram left off, according to a historical account on TON's website.

TON asserts its decentralized nature, underpinned by an open-source codebase and an absence of any single controlling authority. A non-profit foundation headquartered in Zug, Switzerland, oversees its operations.

A TON spokesperson emphasized the distinct separation between Telegram and TON. The TON Foundation, the entity responsible for overseeing the project, is led by Steve Yun as its president. Andrew Rogovoz, former CEO of the Russian social media giant VK, is a founding member of the foundation, as per his LinkedIn profile. Notably, Rogovoz shared a stage with Telegram co-founder Pavel Durov and Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino at a major industry conference in Dubai, where the partnership to issue the stablecoin on the TON blockchain was announced.
