Tether CEO Slams Rumormongering Amid SEC Probe
May 13, 2024 at 05:20 pm
Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino accuses an unnamed executive from a company under SEC investigation of spreading fear about USDT to shake its market dominance. The executive is allegedly introducing a competing stablecoin. Ardoino emphasizes Tether's commitment to safety and compliance, highlighting its anti-money laundering efforts and collaboration with law enforcement.

Tether CEO Rebukes Rumors Amid SEC Investigation
Paolo Ardoino, the CEO of Tether, has denounced a "uninformed CEO" for spreading fear and misinformation about the company's stablecoin, USDT. In a recent social media post, Ardoino accused the unidentified individual of being behind a company currently under investigation by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).
Without revealing the identity of the alleged rumormonger, Ardoino asserted that the individual was attempting to destabilize USDT's dominance in the stablecoin market by launching a competing product. He stressed that Tether remained unwavering in its commitment to upholding the safety and stability of the USDT ecosystem.
To address concerns about USDT's security, Ardoino highlighted Tether's extensive compliance measures. He emphasized the firm's adherence to the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) sanctions list and its collaboration with law enforcement agencies worldwide. Tether also utilizes monitoring tools provided by Chainalysis, a leading blockchain forensics firm.
"Our commitment to safety is paramount," Ardoino stated. "We have blocked over $1.3 billion in suspicious transactions, including scams, hacks, and money laundering, with $1.6 million linked to terrorist financing."
Ardoino's statement comes amid increased scrutiny of stablecoins by regulatory authorities. Recently, Ripple CEO Brad Garlinghouse expressed concern that the U.S. government was targeting Tether for potential regulatory action.
"I think there will be more back swan events. The U.S. government is going after Tether. That is clear to me," Garlinghouse said in an interview.
Despite these concerns, the stablecoin market continues to expand rapidly. Ripple recently announced the launch of its own U.S. dollar stablecoin, pegged 1:1 to the dollar by a reserve of U.S. dollar deposits, U.S. government bonds, and cash equivalents.
Tether's dominance in the stablecoin market remains unchallenged, with USDT accounting for over 50% of the market share. The company's unwavering commitment to compliance and security has played a significant role in maintaining its position as the leading stablecoin in the world.
As the stablecoin market evolves, it remains to be seen whether Tether's position will be threatened by competitors or regulatory pressures. However, Ardoino's forceful response to the rumors suggests that Tether is determined to maintain its dominance in the face of challenges.
