Tether CEO Claps Back at Ripple, Defending Stablecoin Under Fire
May 14, 2024 at 03:10 am
Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino fiercely defends USDT's stability, criticizing an unnamed CEO (likely Ripple's Brad Garlinghouse) who raised concerns about regulatory issues surrounding Tether. Ardoino's post follows Ripple's announcement of a competing stablecoin and comments from Ripple CTO David Schwartz expressing uncertainty about Tether. Garlinghouse responded, claiming no intent to attack Tether but acknowledging government scrutiny of USD-backed stablecoin issuers.

Tether CEO Defends Stablecoin Amidst Criticism from Ripple
In response to perceived negative remarks regarding Tether's stablecoin, USDT, CEO Paolo Ardoino has issued a strongly worded statement. Ardoino's defense comes amidst a lawsuit against Ripple by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and Ripple's recent announcement of its own stablecoin launch.
Ardoino's statement, published on Monday, targeted an unnamed CEO whom he accused of spreading misinformation about USDT's security. While Ardoino refrained from naming the individual, the矛头 appears to point towards Ripple's CEO, Brad Garlinghouse.
Garlinghouse, in a podcast interview last week, expressed his concerns about Tether, stating that the U.S. government was "going after" the company. However, he also acknowledged USDT's significance within the crypto ecosystem.
Echoing Garlinghouse's concerns, Ripple CTO David Schwartz expressed doubts about Tether's regulatory status, saying that "there's just so much uncertainty around" the stablecoin. Schwartz also mentioned that Ripple had previously used Circle's USDC stablecoin and suggested that the company should have launched its own stablecoin earlier.
These comments have been interpreted as veiled attacks on Tether, which currently dominates the stablecoin market with a market capitalization of approximately $111 billion. A Tether spokesperson responded by expressing well wishes for Ripple's new stablecoin but declined further comment.
Ardoino's defense of USDT is not unprecedented. In February, he labeled JPMorgan's analysts as "hypocritical" after they raised concerns about USDT's regulatory compliance and transparency.
Garlinghouse, meanwhile, has disputed Ardoino's interpretation, stating that he was not directly attacking Tether but rather highlighting the increasing regulatory scrutiny faced by stablecoin issuers, particularly those like Tether that back their coins with USD.
Despite occasional scrutiny from regulators, Tether has taken steps to address concerns about illicit activity involving its stablecoins. The company has implemented measures to prevent malicious actors from exploiting USDT for illicit transactions.
As the lawsuit between Ripple and the SEC continues and Ripple prepares to launch its own stablecoin, the dynamics of the stablecoin market remain fluid. Tether, as the current market leader, will likely continue to face challenges from competitors and regulators, while Ripple's foray into the market could potentially shake up the established landscape.
