What Is on the Super Bowl Coin? Here's a Look at the Unique Design

AMERICA'S showpiece event will have the eyes of the whole world watching - including the coin toss.

Whether a neutral, supporter or bettor of some kind, the Super Bowl action will grip all viewers on Sunday.

After the pregame is finished, attention switches to the coin toss.

Despite its brief and arbitrary nature, the coin toss has quite the significance in the grand scheme of things.

The coin ceremony usually dominates discourse before the real action.

It provides a worthy wager for bettors and can ease or ramp up the nerves of supporters.

Heads has prevailed in three of the last four Super Bowls, but one outlier was two years ago - when the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles met in Super Bowl LVII.

The Chiefs, the designated road team in this year's showdown, will be the team to call heads or tails.

As the home team, the Eagles got to choose which color jerseys they would wear.

Chatter around the coin itself has also taken up more interest in recent times.

But, what exactly is on either side of it?

The coin's special design remains limited to the teams competing in the Super Bowl, the edition of the game and the location.

The coin has taken on a more official role since Highland Mint became the main manufacturers 31 years ago.

Highland Mint manufactures and offers commemorative versions of the official coin for sale.

Ronald Reagan’s coin flip in 1985 ignited the importance in Super Bowl tosses.

One might expect the coin to have landed half the time on heads and half on tails.

But tails has had a slight edge in the previous Super Bowls.

The current record stands at 30 for tails (52%) and 28 for heads (48%).
