Stripe Returns to Crypto with USDC Global Payments Launch
Apr 27, 2024 at 04:00 am
Payment processing giant Stripe plans to launch global USDC payments this summer, introducing a new stablecoin option for businesses and customers. This move marks a shift from Stripe's previous stance in 2018 when it discontinued Bitcoin support due to its limited payment utility.

Stripe Unveils USDC Global Payments, Marking a Return to Cryptocurrency Integration
San Francisco, California - Payment processing industry leader Stripe has announced its long-anticipated foray into global USDC payments, set to be rolled out this summer. This development represents a significant move for the company, marking its return to the world of cryptocurrency after discontinuing Bitcoin support in 2018.
Stripe's President and Co-Founder, John Collison, unveiled the upcoming payments feature at a recent presentation. He demonstrated the seamless integration of crypto wallets with Stripe, enabling instant payments with USDC on both the Solana and Ethereum blockchains. Additionally, businesses utilizing Stripe's services will now have the option of accepting payments in stablecoins.
Stripe's previous decision to discontinue Bitcoin payment options in April 2018 stemmed from concerns regarding its limited utility in the payments landscape. However, the company's recent actions indicate a renewed interest in the cryptocurrency space.
In 2022, Stripe launched an extensive suite of tools and services tailored specifically for cryptocurrency-focused businesses, including exchanges, on-ramps, wallets, and NFT marketplaces. This move signaled a shift in Stripe's approach, expanding its offerings beyond traditional payment processing.
"Stripe now supports crypto businesses: exchanges, on-ramps, wallets, and NFT [non-fungible token] marketplaces," Collison explained at the time. "Not just pay-ins but payouts, KYC [know your customer] and identity verification, fraud prevention, and lots more."
Subsequently, Stripe introduced an embeddable fiat-to-crypto onramp solution for Web3 developers and a hosted onramp service accessible via crypto.link.com. The company's unwavering commitment to innovation in the cryptocurrency domain has culminated in the upcoming launch of USDC global payments.
USDC, a stablecoin issued by Circle, maintains a 1:1 peg to the US dollar, situating it as the second-largest stablecoin by market capitalization, trailing only Tether (USDT). The integration of USDC into Stripe's payment ecosystem is expected to enhance the accessibility, stability, and global reach of cryptocurrency payments.
Stripe's decision to embrace USDC highlights the growing acceptance and adoption of stablecoins within the mainstream financial system. The company's extensive network of business customers and its reputation as a reliable payment processing provider are poised to significantly accelerate the adoption of USDC as a global currency.
Industry experts anticipate that Stripe's entry into the USDC payment space will solidify the role of stablecoins as a viable and convenient alternative to traditional payment methods. The move is considered a testament to the maturation and institutional adoption of cryptocurrency and is poised to further accelerate the integration of digital assets into global commerce.
