Spot Bitcoin ETFs Experience First Outflow, Reversing Inflow Trend
On Monday, April 8, the newly launched eleven spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) collectively witnessed an outflow of $224 million, marking a reversal in the previous four days of inflows that had seen a total net of $570 million entering these institutional investment products. The outflow this week was primarily driven by Grayscale, which recorded its largest GBTC outflow since March 25.

Grayscale's GBTC fund, which has been a dominant player in the Bitcoin investment space, experienced a significant outflow of $303 million on Monday, representing approximately 4,300 BTC. Since its conversion to a spot ETF in January, GBTC has seen total outflows of $15.8 billion, equivalent to 48% of the BTC it held prior to the conversion.
Despite the GBTC outflows, analysts at HODL15Capital noted that the new spot Bitcoin ETFs have acquired a substantial 520,544 BTC over the past three months, resulting in a net increase of around 220,000 BTC.
BlackRock and Fidelity Show Muted Inflows

The leading fund for the day was the Bitwise BITB ETF, which saw an inflow of $40.3 million. Bloomberg ETF analyst Eric Balchunas highlighted the broader trend of IBIT (BlackRock) and FBTC (Fidelity) consistently taking cash for 59 consecutive days, placing them among the top 20 longest cash-taking streaks of all time.
Outflows Coincide with Rising Bitcoin Prices
The outflow from spot Bitcoin ETFs coincides with a recent surge in Bitcoin prices, which reached their highest level in over three weeks on April 8, touching $72,500. However, the asset has since experienced a slight pullback during Tuesday's Asian trading session, currently trading at $71,181.

ETF News Roundup
On April 8, Bloomberg ETF analyst James Seyffart reported Defiance's filing for a 2x leveraged Ethereum futures ETF, potentially trading under the ticker ETHL. Seyffart also noted the delay in the SEC's decision on allowing options on spot Bitcoin ETFs. He added that approval requires coordination among multiple regulatory bodies, including the SEC, CFTC, and OCC, and the process could take an indeterminate amount of time.
