US Spot Bitcoin ETFs Face Massive Outflows, Sparking Concerns
May 02, 2024 at 11:08 am
US spot Bitcoin ETFs experienced record net outflows, with BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin Trust witnessing its first outflow day. BlackRock's Bitcoin fund, Fidelity Wise Origin Bitcoin Fund, and Grayscale Bitcoin Trust recorded significant outflows totaling $36.9 million, $191.1 million, and $167.4 million, respectively. Despite the outflows, analysts emphasize that ETF inflows and outflows are a natural part of ETF operations and that gold ETFs have also experienced substantial outflows this year.

Massive Outflows Hit U.S. Spot Bitcoin ETFs, Raising Concerns
The U.S. spot Bitcoin (BTC) exchange-traded funds (ETFs) have experienced record net outflows, signaling a significant shift in investor sentiment towards the cryptocurrency. Among the affected funds, BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) has recorded its first-ever day of outflows.
According to data from Farside Investors, BlackRock's Bitcoin fund witnessed a staggering $36.9 million outflow on May 1. This outflow is the largest single outflow day for the U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs ever recorded.
The outflows extended beyond BlackRock, with nine other Bitcoin ETFs experiencing a combined $526.8 million in withdrawals. The Hashdex Bitcoin ETF (DEFI) was the only exception, reporting zero flows.
The most significant outflow was seen in the Fidelity Wise Origin Bitcoin Fund (FBTC), which shed $191.1 million in net outflows. The Grayscale Bitcoin Trust (GBTC) followed closely with an outflow of $167.4 million.
The outflows coincided with a decline in Bitcoin's price, which has fallen 10.7% over the past week. This volatility has likely contributed to the withdrawal of funds from the ETFs.
Despite the concerning outflows, ETF Store president Nate Geraci emphasized that they are not unprecedented. Geraci pointed out that the iShares Gold ETF and SPDR Gold ETFs have experienced even more significant outflows this year, with $1 billion and $3 billion withdrawn, respectively. However, it's worth noting that gold prices have still risen by 16% year-to-date.
Bloomberg ETF analyst James Seyffart reassured investors that the Bitcoin ETFs are "operating smoothly across the board" and that "inflows and outflows are part of the norm in the life of an ETF."
Yet, the outflows have raised concerns about the longevity of the current Bitcoin rally. Investors are advised to exercise caution and evaluate their own risk tolerance before investing in Bitcoin or any other cryptocurrency.
