Spanish Crypto Mining Startup to Refund $68 Million After Permit Rejection

May 12, 2024 at 03:05 pm

Spanish cryptocurrency mining startup CryptoSolarTech has promised to return $68 million raised during an ICO after failing to obtain a building permit for its planned solar-powered mining facility in Southern Spain. The company had raised the funds in 2018 with the aim of building a crypto mining facility powered by solar energy, but has now cited reasons beyond its control for the failure to obtain the permit. The startup has promised to return the funds within 60 days.

Spanish Cryptocurrency Mining Startup CryptoSolarTech to Refund $68 Million Following Permit Denial

Madrid, Spain - In a stunning turn of events, Spanish cryptocurrency mining startup CryptoSolarTech has announced plans to refund the $68 million raised during its initial coin offering (ICO). The decision comes after the company's efforts to secure a building permit for its planned solar-powered mining facility in Southern Spain were unsuccessful.

A screenshot of an official letter sent to investors by Spanish IT lawyer Sergio Carrasco on February 20th confirmed the news. CryptoSolarTech, which had initially aimed to establish a sustainable and environmentally friendly mining operation, attributed the permit denial to reasons beyond its control.

The startup has pledged to return the funds to investors within 60 days. However, it has emphasized that it bears no responsibility for any tokens purchased after February 19th.

CryptoSolarTech's ICO, launched in June 2018, had garnered immense interest, raising $68 million in just two months. The overwhelming response, which exceeded 6,500 percent of the initial investment target of 900,000 euros, was largely attributed to the project's promise of a sustainable and innovative approach to cryptocurrency mining.

However, within months of the ICO, CryptoSolarTech's token value plummeted, landing it among the top ten "losers" in the ICO market according to a report published by crypto analytics firm Diar in late September 2018.

Despite the setbacks, CryptoSolarTech had secured a partnership with Chinese energy company Risen Energy in October 2018 to develop a 300-megawatt photovoltaic power capacity. Risen Energy was tasked with the project's engineering and construction responsibilities.

The announcement of CryptoSolarTech's refund decision comes amidst a broader decline in ICO activity observed in the fourth quarter of 2018. While the number of ICOs completed during that period increased, the total amount raised decreased by 25 percent compared to the previous quarter.

Despite the overall downtrend, early 2019 has witnessed a higher number of ICO projects compared to the same period in 2017. This suggests that interest in this funding mechanism remains, albeit with greater scrutiny and caution from investors.

CryptoSolarTech's refund announcement serves as a reminder of the inherent risks associated with ICO investments. While the concept of blockchain-based fundraising holds promise, due diligence and thorough research are crucial to mitigate potential losses. As the cryptocurrency industry continues to evolve, regulators and investors alike must exercise vigilance to protect participants and ensure a safe and transparent investment environment.
