Open-Source Governance, Development Key to Blockchain Adoption Globally
Apr 19, 2024 at 05:52 pm
For institutions to leverage blockchain technology effectively, open-source governance and development tools are crucial. Hyperledger's executive director emphasizes that global institutions mandate open-source blockchain technology due to the need for open governance and development. This open-source approach, as seen with Hyperledger Besu, enables public and private permissioned use cases while ensuring diverse community involvement and control.

Open-Source Governance and Development Essential for Blockchain Adoption in Global Institutions
As blockchain technology continues to gain traction, open-source governance and development tools have emerged as indispensable prerequisites for governments, organizations, and financial institutions seeking to leverage its transformative potential. Daniela Barbosa, Executive Director of Hyperledger, recently expounded on the critical importance of open-source blockchain technology in an exclusive interview with Cointelegraph at Paris Blockchain Week.
Open Governance: The Foundation of Trust
Shifting critical financial infrastructure onto blockchain protocols necessitates an underlying network characterized by open-source code and open governance. Open-source blockchain infrastructure, such as Hyperledger Besu, enables organizations to operate on Ethereum with the flexibility for both public and private permissioned use cases.
According to Barbosa, the Linux Foundation's open governance model fosters trust and collaboration. "Organizations worldwide choose Hyperledger because they know it's under the Linux Foundation, with open governance, open development, and the backing of major companies, governments, and organizations," she explained.
Open Development: Empowering Collaboration
Organizations utilizing Hyperledger's technology stack prioritize not only open-source tools but also open development and an active community of diverse maintainers and code contributors. Barbosa emphasized the importance of this collaborative approach: "No one wants to rely on code owned by a single company. If that company changes its mind or goes out of business, organizations could face license fees to continue using their existing infrastructure."
The Linux Foundation's focus on open governance and development fosters the creation of essential tools, as exemplified by the widespread adoption of open-source infrastructure like the Linux Kernel. "For over 25 years, the Linux Foundation has been building open-source communities and the most critical code," said Barbosa. "Essentially, all cloud computing runs on Kubernetes, an open-source project under the Linux Foundation."
Beyond Open-Source Code
Barbosa acknowledged that many organizations have made efforts to open-source their software and code. However, she questioned whether simply making information available on GitHub is sufficient to ensure open development and governance. "The foundation brings comprehensive open governance and development," she explained. "Even banks that compete with one another can collaborate on projects within the Hyperledger community. Companies like Accenture and IBM can work together on initiatives that benefit the entire industry."
This collaborative approach is particularly relevant for the financial services industry, where regulators may scrutinize ownership and underlying code changes. Barbosa stressed that long-term considerations must prioritize open-source governance and development to mitigate potential risks.
Hyperledger Besu: A Prominent Open-Source Ethereum Execution Client
Hyperledger Besu, a prominent Ethereum execution client, has become one of Hyperledger's most critical infrastructure offerings. Developed in collaboration with ConsenSys, Hyperledger Besu enables organizations to leverage the Ethereum ecosystem, including smart contracts, while maintaining the flexibility of public and private functionality.
"By 2019, institutions were keenly interested in the Ethereum ecosystem," said Barbosa. "The addition of Hyperledger Besu, originally contributed by ConsenSys, came at a time when the Hyperledger Foundation and the Ethereum Enterprise Alliance joined forces."
Hyperledger Besu's popularity is evident in the data. According to Barbosa, 12% of Ethereum mainnet users run Hyperledger Besu as their execution client. ConsenSys Linea and Hedera Hashgraph are among the notable organizations utilizing the client.
Conclusion
Open-source governance and development tools are indispensable for institutions seeking to adopt blockchain technology. The Linux Foundation's collaborative approach, exemplified by projects like Hyperledger and the Linux Kernel, fosters trust, innovation, and long-term viability. As Hyperledger Besu's success demonstrates, open-source infrastructure is not merely a technical solution but also a strategic imperative for organizations embracing blockchain's transformative potential.
