Solana (SOL) Community Approves Proposal to Allocate 100% of Priority Fees to Validators
May 28, 2024 at 10:50 pm
Validators are crucial participants in the Solana blockchain network. They run software to confirm transactions and maintain the network's security.

Solana (SOL) validators will receive 100% of priority fees under a recently approved governance proposal.
The proposal, known as SIMD-0096, passed with 77% of votes in favor, according to on-chain governance data released on May 27. Validators are crucial participants in the Solana blockchain network, running software to confirm transactions and maintain the network’s security. Priority fees, on the other hand, are additional fees users can pay to have their transactions processed more quickly during times of high network congestion.
Previously, the network split priority fees, with 50% being burned (removed from circulation) and the other 50% going to validators. However, the proposal creator, identified as tao-stones, argued that this setup incentivized validators to make opaque “side deals” with users to secure more fees.
“The current 50/50 priority fee split encourages validators to engage in side deals to secure more priority fees,” wrote tao-stones in the proposal. “This behavior undermines the effectiveness of priority fees and creates an unfair advantage for large users who can afford to pay more.”

The approved proposal now allocates 100% of priority fees to validators, arguing that this will disincentivize potential “side deals” and improve efficiency in the network’s transaction processing.
Solana’s co-founder Anatoly Yakovenko also highlighted the proposal in a recent Tweet, adding that priority fees will now go “where they belong.”
