Jul 28, 2024 at 01:05 pm
The businessman recently donated several hundreds of millions of naira to establish the Batuli Ajiferuke Shagaya Burn Intensive Care Unit (BAS-BICU) at the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital (UITH), Kwara State.
Sheriff Shagaya, the son of renowned Nigerian businesswoman Bola Shagaya, has made remarkable strides in both business and philanthropy, following closely in his mother's footsteps.
As a successful businessman, Shagaya has nurtured several businesses over the years, including Phoenix Energy Nigeria Limited, Kashton Concepts Nigeria Limited, and Maron Oil and Gas Limited, among others. His entrepreneurial endeavors have garnered the admiration of his mother, who is known for her vast business empire.
Inspired by his mother's legacy of benevolence, Shagaya has also dedicated himself to philanthropic pursuits, aiming to amplify her impact on the less fortunate.
Recently, the businessman made a substantial donation of hundreds of millions of naira to establish the Batuli Ajiferuke Shagaya Burn Intensive Care Unit (BAS-BICU) at the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital (UITH) in Kwara State.
The state-of-the-art burn centre is named in honour of Shagaya's grandmother, Batuli Ajiferuke Cagayan. It is designed to provide comprehensive support to patients suffering from various types of burn injuries, including chemical, electrical, friction, and radiation burns.
Equipped with 10 intensive care rooms, two operating theatres with monitors and anaesthetic machines, two-bedded recovery rooms with monitors and respiratory ventilators, and a laboratory with auto analysers for hematology and chemistry, among other facilities, BAS-BICU aims to offer optimal care to burn patients.
The centre also provides blood bank services, a physiotherapy unit, and a comfortable seminar room with state-of-the-art teleconference capabilities, ensuring better outcomes and brighter futures for burn patients across Nigeria and West Africa.
Speaking at the inauguration of the burn centre, Shagaya highlighted the importance of collective efforts in strengthening society, particularly in bridging the gap in healthcare provisions.
Emphasizing that the government alone cannot shoulder the responsibility of providing quality healthcare to those who need it most, he stated that the project is not merely a token of his love for philanthropy but a reflection of his recognition that everyone has a part to play.
The establishment of the Batuli Ajiferuke Shagaya Burn Intensive Care Unit (BAS-BICU) marks a significant milestone in the healthcare sector, particularly in the advancement of acute burns management techniques.
The new ICU aims to achieve the objective of limiting the systemic insult that accompanies burn injuries and providing a higher level of specialized care to patients suffering from burns.
Moreover, it will play a crucial role in preventing infections related to invasive procedures and improving the overall care and treatment of burn patients.
