Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) Attacked President Donald Trump's Reported Decision to Parole Family Members of Mexican Cartel Leaders

Senate Minority Leader Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) attacked President Donald Trump's reported decision to parole family members of Mexican cartel leaders
President Donald Trump is facing criticism from Senate Minority Leader Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) over a report that the administration is allowing family members of Mexican cartel leaders to be paroled into the U.S.
What Happened: Trump is "letting cartel family members just come right into our country" as part of an agreement, which Schumer described as "dangerous," the senator said in an X post on Wednesday.
"How much memecoin did Sinaloa have to buy to make this happen?" the senior Democrat asked in a serious tone, referencing the Trump TRUMP/USD meme coin and tying it to the reported deal.
Citing an Associated Press report, Schumer noted that the son of Sinaloa Cartel’s notorious drug lord Joaquín "El Chapo" Guzmán, Ovidio Guzman Lopez, who was extradited to the U.S. earlier this year, reached an agreement with the administration, which will see Lopez’s family members travel to the U.S.
The report adds that Mexico's security chief confirmed last week that Lopez’s mother, wife and children crossed into the U.S. from Mexico.
The White House did not immediately respond to Benzinga's request for comment.
Why It Matters: This development comes as Trump has spoken about his war on Mexican drug cartels, which he identifies a threat to national security.
Shortly after his inauguration, Trump signed an executive order to designate certain international cartels as Foreign Terrorist Organizations and Specially Designated Global Terrorists.
El Chapo was found guilty of several criminal charges and sentenced to life in prison in 2019.
Meanwhile, the TRUMP memecoin has sparked political outrage, with Democratic lawmakers accusing Trump of corruption for selling access to himself in exchange for payments made with his meme coin. Trump has refuted claims that he is financially benefitting from the coin.
