Scroll's Binance Listing Sparks Centralization Debate in the Crypto Community

Scroll, an Ethereum layer-2 project, was recently listed on the centralized cryptocurrency exchange Binance, sparking debate in the crypto community about centralization.

Scroll's Binance Listing Sparks Centralization Debate in the Crypto Community

Ethereum layer-2 project Scroll has been listed on major centralized cryptocurrency exchange Binance, sparking heated discussion in the crypto community about the trade-offs between centralization and growth.

The listing, which was announced on Oct. 11, has garnered mixed reactions due to Binance's status as a CEX. While the partnership is expected to boost Scroll's growth, some are concerned about the project's compromise on decentralization principles.

X user Zeng "Jiajun" user Zeng highlighted Scroll's decision to list on Binance as "kneeling" to a CEX, calling it a "tough decision to make" but questioning its long-term implications.

Cointelegraph reached out to Scroll for comment but had not received a response by the time of publication.

However, Scroll co-founder Ye Zhang provided some insights into the partnership in an X post. According to Zhang, the partnership is part of a broader strategy to expand the project's ecosystem, especially in emerging markets.

"We chose Binance as the first exchange to partner with because of their massive user base and strong on-ramp and off-ramp capabilities," said Zhang.

The Scroll co-founder highlighted that Binance will facilitate user funds' movement in and out of the Scroll network through on-ramp and off-ramp services on Binance.

"This partnership will make it easier for users to participate in the Scroll ecosystem and benefit from the high throughput and low fees offered by our layer-2 solution," added Zhang.

However, not everyone in the crypto community shared Zhang's optimism. Some raised concerns about the partnership with Binance and its potential impact on Scroll's decentralization efforts.

Jiajun, an Ether ( ETH ) advocate and X user, expressed disappointment, saying, "Binance is not the exchange that should have listed Scroll first. If the chain had enough activity and users, Binance would have listed it organically without needing a partnership. Now everyone will think Binance listed Scroll first because it paid them the most."

Other users on X suggested that Binance should not have been the first exchange to list Scroll. They argued that if the "chain had enough activity and users," Binance would have listed it organically, without the need for a partnership.

"Binance listing should have been a natural consequence of chain activity, not the first exchange listing," said one user.

In response to the criticism, Zhang defended the partnership, saying that Scroll is "decentralized at the protocol level," and the CEX integration is for user convenience.

"We chose Binance as the first exchange to partner with because it will help onboard more users into the Scroll ecosystem," said the Scroll co-founder.

Zhang also addressed concerns about token distribution, clarifying that launch pool allocation comes from the ecosystem and growth category, ensuring the community airdrop remains unaffected.
