Russia Turns to Bitcoin to Evade Sanctions as the West Attempts to Control Cryptocurrency Usage

Efforts by the West to punish Russia using an array of sanctions are being undermined as Russian companies increasingly use Bitcoin to evade penalties.

Russia Turns to Bitcoin to Evade Sanctions as the West Attempts to Control Cryptocurrency Usage

Russia's use of Bitcoin to evade Western sanctions is highlighting government attempts to control cryptocurrency usage, despite its decentralized nature.

Russian companies are increasingly using Bitcoin for international trade, following a law signed by President Vladimir Putin that legalizes crypto ownership and mining.

Despite sanctions blocking Russian banks from SWIFT, Bitcoin enables them to finance international trade and process cross-border payments.

Putin has accused the US of weaponizing the dollar, while the Kremlin's use of Bitcoin in its economic arsenal has sparked debate over centralized control of cryptocurrency.

Currently, only approved Russian entities can use Bitcoin, but Finance Minister Anton Siluanov's recent comments suggest more firms will be permitted to make and receive payments with the cryptocurrency.

Russia's embrace of Bitcoin is a stark shift from the Central Bank's previous push for a complete cryptocurrency ban. However, key officials have acknowledged the new legislation aims to mitigate sanctions and facilitate international payments.

This pivotal decision has reignited discussions on dedollarization efforts by the BRICS trade bloc, with speculation that the community will launch a gold-backed stablecoin.

Former President Donald Trump has expressed interest in a US Bitcoin reserve but strongly opposes the BRICS initiative, threatening 100% tariffs on countries involved.
