Ripple CEO Criticizes SEC’s Inconsistent Crypto Regulations
Jul 31, 2024 at 08:30 am
Ripple CEO Brad Garlinghouse has criticized the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) for inconsistent regulatory practices in the crypto space.

Ripple CEO Brad Garlinghouse took aim at the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) over its inconsistent regulatory practices in the crypto space, following the regulator’s revelation that it intends to amend its complaint against Binance concerning the security status of certain crypto tokens.
Highlighting the contradiction between SEC Chair Gary Gensler’s statements and the agency’s actions, Garlinghouse stressed the need for clear, consistent regulations to support the cryptocurrency industry’s growth and innovation.
In a joint response to the court’s earlier order, submitted on Tuesday, the SEC announced its intention to amend its complaint to address issues concerning “Third Party Crypto Asset Securities,” having previously classified several crypto assets as securities.
The regulator’s move comes after Binance and its affiliates were accused by the SEC of violating U.S. securities laws by offering and selling digital assets that should have been registered with the agency.
Garlinghouse took to the social media platform X to criticize the SEC’s inconsistent regulatory practices on Tuesday.
“More evidence of SEC hypocrisy,” he wrote. “Chair Gensler testified the rules are clear, yet his SEC can’t figure them out and applies them haphazardly, festering more industry confusion.”
“A political agenda and/or bad faith litigation tactics. Definitely not a ‘faithful allegiance to the law,'” he added.
The SEC’s approach to regulating cryptocurrencies has been a subject of scrutiny and criticism from various parties within the industry.
The agency’s broad definition of securities and its use of enforcement actions to determine which crypto assets fall under its jurisdiction have been among the key points of contention.
Garlinghouse's comments come amid growing frustration within the cryptocurrency industry over the lack of clear regulatory guidance from the SEC.
The agency’s unclear guidelines and unpredictable actions are seen as stifling progress and fostering distrust.
The Ripple CEO has repeatedly highlighted the urgent need for consistent and transparent regulations to support industry growth and innovation.
Ripple has actively pursued regulatory clarity to ensure compliance in the evolving cryptocurrency landscape. The company's legal battle with the SEC, focusing on whether XRP is a security, culminated in a landmark ruling in July 2023.
Other companies, such as Coinbase, have also been actively seeking regulatory clarity to create a more stable and predictable environment for the cryptocurrency industry.
