Ripple CEO Clarifies Position on Tether Stablecoin Amid Criticism
May 14, 2024 at 12:45 am
Ripple CEO Brad Garlinghouse clarified his stance on Tether, stating that he was not attacking the stablecoin issuer. In response to media interpretations that he had criticized Tether, Garlinghouse clarified that his comments were taken out of context, emphasizing Tether's importance within the crypto ecosystem and expressing concerns about increased government scrutiny on USD-backed stablecoins.

Ripple CEO Clarifies Stance on Tether Stablecoin
Brad Garlinghouse, the CEO of Ripple, a leading blockchain payments company, has addressed recent media reports that portrayed him as attacking Tether, the issuer of the USDT stablecoin.
In a statement posted on his official XRP account, Garlinghouse emphatically denied engaging in any such attack. He attributed the perceived criticism to a viral interview with Chris Vasquez of the World Class Podcast, which he clarified was taken out of context.
"The media has taken words that appeared as an attack out of context," Garlinghouse stated. "The interview did not end with criticism. I immediately followed my comments by emphasizing that Tether is a hugely important part of the crypto ecosystem."
Garlinghouse further elaborated that his comments were intended to draw attention to the heightened regulatory scrutiny facing USD-backed stablecoin issuers by the United States government, and that Tether, as the largest issuer, was within their line of sight.
"I wasn't attacking Tether," Garlinghouse reiterated. "My point was that the US government has made it clear that they want more control over these issuers."
Tether and its CEO, Paolo Ardoino, have long been subjected to scrutiny within the crypto community. Garlinghouse's comments were seen by some as a strategic move ahead of Ripple's upcoming stablecoin launch.
Addressing the allegations in a lengthy statement, Ardoino accused Garlinghouse of spreading Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt (FUD) about Tether. "His comments are an attempt to undermine our reputation," Ardoino asserted.
Tether remains the dominant stablecoin in the crypto market, with a circulating supply exceeding 110 billion USDT. Ripple, with its strong presence in the payments sector, is widely perceived as a potential challenger to Tether's dominance.
The exchange of statements between Garlinghouse and Ardoino underscores the growing regulatory and competitive landscape surrounding stablecoins. As governments and financial institutions pay increased attention to the regulatory implications of these assets, stablecoin issuers face heightened scrutiny and the need to address concerns over transparency, reserves, and compliance.
