These Are the Rare Coins That Could Make You Rich

Oct 04, 2024 at 05:29 pm

If you're looking to make a pretty penny, it's worth checking your coin collection to see if there are any rare pieces in there.

These Are the Rare Coins That Could Make You Rich

Have you ever wondered if you could get rich by finding rare coins in your piggy bank or couch cushions? Well, according to a TikTok account dedicated to coin collecting, it's entirely possible.

The account, @CoinCollectingWizard, has over 200,000 followers and recently shared a video highlighting some of the rarest coins to look out for.

"The rarity of the 1933 UK penny makes it highly sought after by collectors and its scarcity contributes significantly to its market value," the creator says in the video. "If you have a 1933 UK penny in your possession, then you are 100% rich and can easily sell this for over £100,000."

According to Coin Archives, the 1933 penny was never officially released into circulation and is one of the rarest British coins in existence. Only a handful of specimens are known to have survived, making them highly prized by collectors.

Another rare coin mentioned in the video is the 1983 New Pence Two Pence coin. The creator explains that the Royal Mint began changing the inscription on the coin from "New Pence" to "Two Pence" in 1983.

"If you find this rare coin, you are looking at £1,000+," the creator adds.

The coin in question was struck during a transitional period when the minting process was being updated to reflect the change in currency from New Pence to Two Pence. As a result, a small number of coins were produced with the New Pence inscription despite being intended for the Two Pence denomination.

Moving on, the video showcases an Aquatic 50p error coin with lines over the face, highlighting its potential to be worth a small fortune.

"A small handful of this original design was put into circulation but it was then adapted very quickly to show the face above the water," the creator explains. "With so few of the original design out there, it's meant the coin value has pushed up significantly."

The Aquatic 50p coin was part of the London 2012 Olympic Games 50p series and featured an iconic swimming design. However, during the production process, a batch of coins was accidentally struck with lines intersecting the swimmer's face.

These error coins were quickly recalled and replaced with the intended design, but a few managed to slip through the cracks and enter circulation, making them highly valuable among collectors.

Finally, the TikToker discusses a gold proof Kew Gardens 50p coin that recently sold for £6,800 at the Royal Mint's online auction.

"The ultra-rare version of the sought-after Kew Gardens 50p was estimated to fetch between £5,000 and £6,000 and did end up selling for thousands," the creator adds.

The Kew Gardens 50p coin was released in 2009 as part of a series celebrating the Royal Horticultural Society's 200th anniversary. The gold proof version of the coin is particularly rare, with only 2,000 pieces being struck.

So, there you have it! If you happen to stumble upon any of these rare coins, whether in your spare change, old collections, or at car boot sales, be sure to hold on to them tightly. They could just set you up for a comfortable retirement.
