RANGERS CONDEMN COIN-THROWING INCIDENT WHICH LEFT CELTIC STAR ARNE ENGELS STRUCK ABOVE THE EYE

Celtic star Arne Engels was struck by a coin during the Old Firm clash at Ibrox.

The midfielder crumpled to the ground in the corner after being struck just above the eye with a missile thrown from the home fans in the Broomloan/Govan corner.

It’s the latest in a depressingly long list of such incidents in this fixture – with away fans currently locked out of each ground.

Match referee Don Robertson appeared to pick up a couple of coins and hand them his fourth official then on to the police officer on the scene, where they were promptly bagged up as evidence.

The incident marred what was an otherwise hugely positive occasion for the home side, for whom under-fire boss Philippe Clement landed his first Old Firm win in seven attempts.

They said in a statement: “Rangers FC condemns this incident in the strongest possible terms.

"The club can confirm it will assist Police Scotland with their investigation.”

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers meanwhile issued an update on the German midfielder.

He said he was okay after the incident, but insisted that had the coin hit him inch lower it would have hit him in the eye.

"An inch lower, he would have been [hit] right in the eye.

"It is obviously not great for the game but, yes, he's okay."
