Proton Opens Early Access to Self-Custodial Bitcoin Wallet

Proton, known for its privacy-focused email service, has opened up early access to a self-custodial Bitcoin wallet.

The wallet integrates with Proton's existing privacy infrastructure and is available to Proton Visionary and Lifetime users.

While the wallet currently only supports Bitcoin, Proton CEO Andy Yen hinted in the announcement post that "the type of assets that you can hold in Proton Wallet may evolve over time as we add more capabilities."

Proton Wallet also simplifies sending and receiving Bitcoin.

Leveraging Proton Mail's encrypted key management, users can send Bitcoin by entering the destination account's email address, eliminating the need for traditional wallet addresses.

This capability is available to anyone with a Proton account linked to their Proton wallet, facilitating easy asset transfers without entrusting private key information to a third party.

Emphasizing Proton's role beyond the crypto domain, Yen stated, "We are not a crypto company. We do not speculate in crypto, we are not a crypto exchange, and we do not participate in crypto lending."

However, he added, "Having said that, we do believe in the principle of giving you control of your financial freedom."

The Swiss-based company's services, including email, password management, VPN, and cloud storage, are all protected by end-to-end encryption.

Proton was founded in 2014 and surpassed 100 million email accounts in August 2023. Its privacy-oriented approach has made its services popular among crypto holders.
