Do your pets celebrate your homecoming?

Apr 19, 2025 at 07:33 pm

Jumping, barking, running in circles and accidental pee: Does your homecoming trigger a celebration from your cherished pet?

Do your pets celebrate your homecoming?

Coming home to a happy pet is one of life's simple joys. But have you ever noticed that your dog greets you by accidentally peeing on the rug or your cat presents you with a dead mouse?

While these actions might seem odd to humans, they are natural expressions of a pet's joy at their owner's return, according to veterinarian Dr. Michelle MacMillan.

"Pets often get very excited when their owners come home, especially if they greet them with a high-pitched voice and enthusiastic body language," Dr MacMillan told NeedToKnow.online.

"This can send their excitement into overdrive and some dogs will accidentally pee if they are overexcited, especially puppies and young dogs who haven't yet fully developed bladder control."

If you want to promote more relaxed behaviour over time, try to maintain a low-key greeting. A serene entrance and delayed affection can be beneficial.

But what if your pet greets you by looking away and acting shy? This could be their discreet way of expressing joy at your arrival.

"Some pets are a bit more subtle, but just as pleased," Dr MacMillan explained.

"Acting shy or bashful may even be a form of submissive behavior. Your pet sees you as their leader, and they are greeting you in a respectful manner."

To respond, get down to their level and use a soothing tone to reassure them that you're happy to see them too.

Dogs often offer toys as an invitation to play, while cats might present 'gifts' as a token of affection.

"It's their method of trying to interact with you immediately," the expert stated.

"They may have been somewhat bored while you were away and are now ready for a play session or some exercise."

If it's safe, accept the gift - even if it doesn't exactly match your idea of a welcome-home present. MacMillan explains: “The way you react can also reinforce this behaviour as if they know bringing you a toy is likely to elicit a good response from you, they will continue to do it each time.”

Surprisingly, if your pet barely acknowledges your entrance, it's often a positive sign.

"It indicates that they don't view your coming and going as a significant event and that they are content in their own company," explains Dr MacMillan.

However, she warns that if such behavior is a new development or comes with other symptoms of depression, it's time to consult your vet.

Don’t take it personally. Let them come to you on their terms.

If your furry friend greets you with an array of sounds as you enter the house, remember that every noise is their way of communicating.

Cats might express their feelings through a variety of vocalisations such as trills, chirps, or meows, which could indicate affection or perhaps slight irritation.

Dogs, on the other hand, may bark, whine, or howl to release pent-up emotions.

It's crucial to observe not just the sound but also the accompanying body language. A wagging tail usually means excitement, while pinned ears or pacing could signal a need for comfort or some alone time.
