OpenAI Backs Three Senate Bills Focused on the Safety and Accessibility of Artificial Intelligence

The endorsed bills, including the Future of AI Innovation Act, the CREATE AI Act and the NSF AI Education Act, each address distinct aspects of AI.

OpenAI Backs Three Senate Bills Focused on the Safety and Accessibility of Artificial Intelligence

Artificial intelligence and machine learning company OpenAI has thrown its support behind three Senate bills that focus on the safety, accessibility and education of artificial intelligence.

In a LinkedIn post on Friday, Anna Makanju, OpenAI's vice president of global affairs, announced the company's endorsement of the Future of AI Innovation Act, the CREATE AI Act and the NSF AI Education Act. Each bill addresses a distinct aspect of AI, and together they reflect a concerted effort to guide the development of the technology in a way that is both responsible and inclusive.

The bills

Makanju highlighted the Future of AI Innovation Act as central to OpenAI's endorsement. The legislation aims to solidify congressional support for the United States AI Safety Institute, a body dedicated to developing best practices for the safe deployment of frontier AI systems.

The CREATE AI Act, on the other hand, formalizes the creation of an initiative to democratize access to AI research resources. This democratization is crucial for fostering innovation and ensuring that the benefits of AI advancements are widely distributed.

In addition to supporting the development and democratization of AI, OpenAI is backing the NSF AI Education Act. This bill focuses on strengthening the AI workforce and enhancing educational opportunities related to AI tools.

Makanju's post also underscores OpenAI's commitment to engaging with policymakers and stakeholders in shaping the future of AI. The company's representatives have been actively meeting with members of Congress and the Biden administration to discuss AI safety, workforce development and other key issues.

Push for AI regulation

OpenAI's support for the legislation comes as a group of Senate Democrats, joined by an independent lawmaker, are pushing for answers from OpenAI CEO Sam Altman regarding the company's protocols for ensuring safety and its treatment of whistleblowers within the organization.

The senators sent a letter to Altman on Thursday, expressing concerns about an employee who was fired after raising objections to the company's handling of AI safety and ethics. The letter follows a report by The New York Times detailing the employee's dismissal and subsequent legal action against OpenAI.

As AI continues to evolve, policymakers worldwide are increasingly exploring the need for regulatory frameworks to govern its development and deployment.

In a recent warning, United Kingdom officials highlighted the need for robust regulatory frameworks to govern AI development, likening it to the rigorous standards applied to medicine and nuclear power.

Simultaneously, another British official issued a stark warning, urging swift action to prevent uncontrolled AI growth from posing an existential threat within the next two years.

As the European Union's Artificial Intelligence Act nears completion, EU lawmakers are taking a proactive stance on AI regulation. Regulators are now considering a measure that would require explicit labeling of content produced by AI systems.
