OKX Launches X Layer Connecting Users to Ethereum Network
Apr 16, 2024 at 10:00 am
Crypto exchange OKX has launched the public mainnet of "X Layer," a layer 2 solution powered by Polygon's CDK that connects users to the Ethereum ecosystem. X Layer enables OKX's 50 million users to withdraw tokens from the exchange onto the layer 2 and interact with DAPPs, boosting privacy and scalability.

OKX Launches X Layer, a Layer 2 Solution Linking Users to the Ethereum Ecosystem
Cryptocurrency exchange OKX has unveiled the public mainnet deployment of "X Layer," a layer 2 solution designed to facilitate seamless connectivity between users and the Ethereum ecosystem. This development marks a significant step towards enhancing the functionality and scalability of OKX's platform.
Powered by the Polygon Chain Development Kit (CDK), X Layer leverages zero-knowledge (ZK) proofs, which offer privacy and scalability enhancements to developers. As a result of the mainnet launch, OKX's extensive user base of 50 million can seamlessly withdraw tokens from the exchange to its Ethereum-connected layer 2 network, enabling them to engage with decentralized applications (DAPPs) on-chain.
Data from CoinGecko indicates a surge in the value of OKX's platform token, OKB, which serves as a payment mechanism for network gas fees. OKB has experienced a 14% increase in the past 24 hours, currently trading at $59.15. This surge coincides with OKX's emergence as the third-largest cryptocurrency exchange by 24-hour trading volume, surpassing $5.2 billion and trailing only Binance and Bybit.
The public mainnet launch of X Layer follows in the footsteps of other major crypto exchanges, including Bybit and Coinbase, which have introduced their own layer 2 blockchain networks, Mantle and Base, respectively. These initiatives share the common goal of facilitating the onboarding of millions of individuals onto the blockchain ecosystem.
Marc Boiron, CEO of Polygon, predicts that more crypto exchanges will adopt the Polygon CDK to establish their own layer 2 networks.
"There's undoubtedly a level of 'Hey, Base is doing this, and we see Bybit doing this,' but I believe much of this is simply a vast opportunity that exists, particularly within this ecosystem, where Polygon provides the AggLayer that connects everything," Boiron explained.
X Layer seamlessly integrates with Polygon's AggLayer, a protocol designed to unify various layer 2 networks within an aggregated blockchain ecosystem. This integration enables users to transfer assets across different chains.
"X Layer's connection to the AggLayer addresses the fragmentation of liquidity and users across chains on the AggLayer, fostering their collective growth," Boiron further elaborated. "OKX's 50 million users now have a simplified pathway to interact with X Layer and the myriad of other chains connected to the AggLayer."
The introduction of X Layer represents a significant advancement for OKX's platform, aligning with the broader industry trend towards layer 2 solutions. By providing its users with enhanced on-chain capabilities and connectivity to the Ethereum ecosystem, OKX is solidifying its position as a leading provider of crypto exchange services.
