Nasdaq Seeks SEC Approval for Bitcoin Index Options

Aug 28, 2024 at 03:01 am

On Tuesday, Nasdaq announced its intention to seek approval from the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) for the launch and trading of options on a Bitcoin index.

Nasdaq Seeks SEC Approval for Bitcoin Index Options

Breaking: Nasdaq to File with SEC for Bitcoin Index Options

Nasdaq Inc. is set to file with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) to launch and trade options on a Bitcoin index, according to a statement by the exchange on Tuesday. This move is part of the exchange operator's broader strategy to expand its footprint in the digital asset space and introduce new avenues for institutional investors.

The regulatory landscape in the U.S. has seen increasing attention to cryptocurrency derivatives, but the SEC is yet to approve options on any individual exchange-traded funds (ETFs) that directly track spot Bitcoin prices. This includes Nasdaq's application to trade options on BlackRock's $21.3 billion iShares Bitcoin Trust ETF, which began trading in January. The approval of these options is seen as a key step in the development of the crypto derivatives market.

Nasdaq's proposed index options would be listed derivatives designed to provide a cost-effective and versatile instrument for gaining exposure to Bitcoin. These options would be based on the CME CF Bitcoin Real-Time Index, which is created by CF Benchmarks and tracks Bitcoin futures and options contracts traded on the CME Group's exchange. With the introduction of these options, Nasdaq aims to offer an alternative avenue for hedging exposure to Bitcoin, the world's largest cryptocurrency by market capitalization, to institutional investors and traders.

In a statement to Blockworks, Matt Hougan, Chief Investment Officer of Bitwise, highlighted the significance of having options available for Bitcoin to normalize the asset class. “We’re missing a part of the liquidity picture that ETF options would provide,” Hougan said, alluding to the role of options in boosting purchasing power and offering a low-cost method to manage risk.

As regulatory bodies continue to evaluate and shape the crypto landscape, the broader market has seen the introduction of various products, with traders exploring new avenues amid the regulatory gray area. This includes the recent launch of leveraged ETFs that track Bitcoin and options on these funds. In response to SEC feedback, exchanges have also been making adjustments to their applications.

Nasdaq's move to introduce Bitcoin index options, pending regulatory approval, could expand the spectrum of financial instruments available to cryptocurrency investors, potentially enhancing market liquidity and introducing new strategies for risk management in the evolving crypto landscape.
