Since 2021, rumors of a “MetaMask token” (nicknamed $MASK) on Ethereum have been circulating in the crypto ecosystem.
Since 2021, rumors of a “MetaMask token” (nicknamed $MASK) on Ethereum have been swirling in the crypto ecosystem. Recently, one of the co-founders of the popular application hinted that this possibility was still on the table, although he remained vague about a potential timeline.
MetaMask Token Plans Still Uncertain, According To Co-FounderMetaMask co-founder Dan Finlay said the wallet is still considering launching a native token, possibly called MASK, though no concrete plans exist yet. Indeed, when asked about his company’s intentions, Dan Finlay, MetaMask’s co-founder, simply responded, “Maybe.” But this laconic response was enough to reignite speculations about a potential $MASK token, first mentioned in 2021.
Back then, key figures from the ConsenSys ecosystem (MetaMask’s parent company) had discussed this possibility, suggesting that a token could enhance the wallet’s community governance and foster closer integration with ConsenSys' products, such as Linea and Infura.
"We're still considering it. If and when we do launch a token, you'll hear about it first in the MetaMask app or on MetaMask.io. You'll find a link to it on the MetaMask website or in your MetaMask application. It won't come from an unknown account on social media or in an email that claims to be from MetaMask. And we'll never ask for your seed phrase or private key. We'll never contact you out of the blue to request personal information or attempt to scam you. If someone is messaging you on social media claiming to be from MetaMask, they are not. Block them and report them to the platform," stated part of the post.
Faced with the proliferation of scams exploiting MetaMask’s popularity, Finlay reassured users that if a token were to be launched, official communications would not come through dubious social media channels or emails. They would instead come directly from the MetaMask application or website.
“You’ll find the link in your MetaMask wallet. It won’t come from an unknown account on social media,” he stated.
Another point raised by Finlay is the evolution of the American regulatory framework, which could become more favorable to token launches under a new Republican administration. A paradigm shift that, according to him, would represent “a unique opportunity to push the boundaries” of Web3.
What Impacts for the Ethereum Ecosystem ?
If MetaMask were to introduce a native token, it could have significant implications for the adoption of decentralized governance, user retention, and increased integration with other ConsenSys products like Linea and Infura. Finlay has also confirmed the integration of Solana this May.

By directly linking the token to the wallet, MetaMask would also reinforce its “wallet-first approach,” while enhancing the overall user experience.
Despite the persisting uncertainty, the mere mention of a MetaMask token sparks enthusiasm in the crypto community. Its launch would signify a significant strategic shift, repositioning the wallet as a central player in Web3 beyond just being an access tool.
For now, caution is advised. However, there is no doubt that the upcoming MetaMask announcements will be closely monitored with great interest.
