Mt. Gox Makes a $2.2 Billion BTC Transfer Days After Postponing Client Repayments

The world’s first major Bitcoin exchange – Mt. Gox – made a huge crypto transfer this week. The $2.2 billion BTC transaction is the largest to come from the exchange in months.

The defunct exchange moved 32,371 BTC, valued at $2.2 billion, to an unknown wallet. The reason for the transfer is unclear. This development comes just days after Mt. Gox announced that it was postponing its plans to begin repaying its customers. The original date was October 31, 2024, which has now been pushed back by a year.

A decade after the exchange’s collapse, Mt. Gox’s bankruptcy repayment duties to its creditors are still ongoing. The company owes an estimated $9.4 billion to its former customers – and this latest development is said to be another step toward clearing things up with its creditors.

Bitcoin recovers after $2.2B withdrawal

The world’s leading cryptocurrency saw a slight decrease in value as news broke that the sum was being transferred to a cold wallet. At its lowest point during the past 24 hours, BTC reached as low as $66,880 in the morning.

However, the asset is now picking up the pace in anticipation of major events happening this week like the U.S. Presidential election. As of now, BTC trades at $70,522 — up 3.20% over the past 24 hours.
