Meme Coins: Boon or Bane for the Crypto Industry?

May 01, 2024 at 11:59 pm

Meme coins, despite their questionable value and prevalence of scams, have sparked a surge of interest in the crypto industry. Valued at over $51 billion, these tokens often capitalize on popular memes and culture, drawing attention and users to various blockchains. While critics dismiss them as "the dumpster of crypto," others argue that the attention they bring benefits the industry by driving growth and experimentation.

Meme Coins: Blessing or Bane for the Crypto Industry?

When Satoshi Nakamoto, the anonymous cryptographer, invented Bitcoin (BTC), he envisioned a world where people could liberate themselves from the oppressive chains of banks and tyrannical governments. However, what he likely did not anticipate was a crypto industry teeming with crudely drawn frog, cat, and dog tokens, along with a sprinkling of offensive memes.

As the fourth Bitcoin halving was overshadowed by a speculative frenzy in meme coins, including on the Bitcoin network itself, a heated debate has emerged over the value of such coins to the crypto industry. One answer to this question is their combined market capitalization, which currently stands at an impressive $51 billion.

Defining Meme Coins: A "Dumpster of Crypto"

Many vocal critics, including the well-known anonymous crypto commentator Polynya, express disillusionment and anger at the recent surge in meme coins, arguing that they have no place in the crypto ecosystem. In his final blog post on Medium, where he essentially renounced crypto, Polynya denounced meme coins as "merely a vehicle to transfer wealth from the many to the most obnoxious people on the planet."

The analyst highlighted reports of a wave of racist meme coins (dubbed "SlurFi" by some) as representing the token form's nadir. "Things have hit an all-new bottom with 2024: racist, sexist, and other shitheaded memecoins."

Polynya added, "At this point, this evil in crypto is banal and normalized. This has become the identity of crypto — sure, some useful stuff, but mostly just infested with scams and absolute degeneracy."

Redditor complaints indicate that the latest line of racist meme coins is crossing a line.

Beyond their offensive nature, meme coins are also plagued by rug pulls, scams, and malicious taxes. They are often run by inept founders who lack expertise in blockchain technology.

A recent investigation from Magazine found that 1 in 6 new Base meme coins are outright scams, while almost 91% of them had at least one security vulnerability. According to BlockAid, more than 50% of presale tokens launched on Solana between November and February were malicious.

Degeneracy in Meme Coins: Hinderance for Serious Builders?

Some argue that the proliferation of meme coins is contributing to the disillusionment and abandonment of the industry by genuine builders. The "financial nihilism" sentiment posits that nothing in crypto truly matters; everything is a meme, and supporting projects with a real purpose is pointless.

"Seeing meme coins leading to disillusionment/churn of crypto builders to a degree more extreme than even the bear market the past few years," observes Michael Dempsey, managing partner at Compound, a New York-based venture capital firm.

"Building something of durable value is a long emotional journey, and it can be tough after a two-year bear market [...] to then have a reversion of curiosity from crypto, and the main vacuum of energy is gambling."

Eddy Lazzarin, chief technical officer at Andreessen Horowitz, another venture capital executive, believes that meme coins are "undermining the long-term vision of crypto" that has kept so many in the space.

Meme Coins: Attention Grabbers or User Magnetism?

Despite the racist tokens, rug pulls, and scams, meme coins are not entirely without merit. Some argue that the attention they attract ultimately benefits crypto as a whole. This attention certainly benefits blockchain networks as traders race to buy and sell coins. Solana, Base, and BNB Chain, in particular, are experiencing an influx of meme coin enthusiasts seeking low-cost trading opportunities.

In recent months, layer-1 blockchains BNB Chain and Avalanche have launched million-dollar funds to lure meme coin projects to their networks and drive growth.

A community proposal on the Ethereum layer-2 network Arbitrum is also seeking a massive $3.3 billion fund to open the floodgates for meme coins. The proposal, which befits a meme coin asking for billions, was hastily assembled in an hour.

"Everyday, we see headlines of how Solana meme coins go from 0-100M+ FDVs in a matter of days," says 0xkawz, the creator of the meme coin fund proposal.

"There is no reason Arbitrum DAO shouldn't at least try to spur a meme coin initiative [...] it's hard to argue that Solana and, more recently, BASE, have taken all the attention," they added.

Solana's Meme Coin Frenzy: Driving Network Usage

In mid-March, Solana's network activity briefly surpassed Ethereum's as traders hoped to capitalize on the next big meme coin. Trading volume on March 15 reached $3.5 billion, outpacing its older and slower rival by more than $1.1 billion, according to DefiLlama.

The frantic activity tested the scaling limits of the network, exposing its vulnerabilities. At one point, up to three-quarters of all transactions failed. A patch was issued a month later to address this issue.

BNB Chain, the speculative degen blockchain of choice from the last cycle, is eyeing the same market. The chain has announced it would allocate up to $1 million throughout April to reward developers whose projects achieve a 30-day volume above $2 billion on the network as part of its "Meme Innovation Campaign."

"When the community sends a clear signal that something matters to them, we seek to deliver on it," a spokesperson from BNB Chain said, adding that meme coins have the potential to bring more users into crypto, regardless of whether they end up being just "noise in the crypto market."

Solana's head of strategy, Austin Federa, attributes the popularity of meme coins on Solana to their status as "rather strictly proxies for online culture and community."

"For example, certain meme coins, like BONK, have rallied communities together and built vibrant ecosystems that resonate in the broader crypto space
