Mantra Navigates Restructuring and OM Token Turmoil, Doubles Down on Real-World Assets
Jan 14, 2026 at 10:12 pm
Mantra pivots with a strategic restructuring, addressing OM token's past volatility and reaffirming its commitment to real-world assets amidst a challenging market.

New York, NY – In a move reflecting the tough realities of the crypto landscape, blockchain project Mantra is hitting the reset button. Following what its leadership calls the most challenging year in company history, marked by a dramatic OM token collapse and persistent market headwinds, Mantra is undergoing a significant restructuring, reaffirming its core focus on real-world assets (RWAs).
A Strategic Pivot After a Tumultuous Year
Mantra CEO John Patrick Mullin announced the shift to a leaner, more capital-efficient operational structure. This overhaul, which includes job cuts across various teams and a streamlining of operations, isn't merely about cost-cutting; it's a strategic realignment to sharpen execution and concentrate resources where Mantra sees the brightest long-term opportunities. Mullin, taking full accountability, emphasized that this decision was driven by a broader strategic reset rather than just financial tightening, even as it aims to extend the company's runway.
The backdrop to this restructuring is the precipitous fall of Mantra's OM token. After hitting an all-time high of $8.99 in February 2025, OM plummeted to $0.59 by April, a staggering 99% decline from its peak. Mantra attributed this crash to aggressive leverage policies on centralized exchanges, warning of systemic risks from liquidation cascades. The company responded with measures like validator decentralization, a real-time tokenomics dashboard, and the burning of 300 million OM tokens – including a portion from Mullin's personal allocation – in an effort to restore trust and reduce supply. Despite these efforts, a prolonged market downturn made Mantra’s previous cost base unsustainable.
Doubling Down on Real-World Assets and Layer-1 Vision
Despite the operational shake-up, Mullin is resolute: “This hasn’t changed our core RWA strategy in the slightest. If anything, we are doubling down on it.” The company is prioritizing its Layer-1 chain, the newly launched mantraUSD stablecoin, and Mantra Finance. MantraUSD, backed by short-term U.S. Treasury bills, is designed to be the essential currency for accessing RWA products within the Mantra ecosystem, underscoring a clear path forward for the platform.
This renewed focus comes alongside a crucial migration deadline for OM token holders: ERC-20 versions must be migrated to the native MANTRA Chain token before January 15, 2026. The company also weathered months of strained relations with crypto exchange OKX, with Mullin having urged OM holders to withdraw their tokens amid disputes over a token migration. These tensions highlight the complex, often fraught, dynamics within the crypto space.
The Road Ahead: Leaner, Meaner, and Ready for Business
While the restructuring disproportionately affected business development, marketing, HR, and support functions, it's all part of a plan to concentrate resources on core execution. Mantra's total value locked (TVL) has seen a significant decline from a February 2025 high of $4.51 million to $864,857, underscoring the urgency of this pivot. By aligning operations with
