Lightning Labs Tests Taproot Assets Protocol for Stablecoin Issuance on Bitcoin Blockchain

Lightning Labs, the developer behind Bitcoin's Lightning Network, has tested a protocol for issuing stablecoins on the Bitcoin blockchain, aiming to facilitate new uses for Bitcoin and expand its use as a global currency.

In a significant development for the Bitcoin ecosystem, Lightning Labs, the company behind the Lightning Network, has successfully tested a protocol that enables the issuance of stablecoins on the Bitcoin blockchain.

CEO Elizabeth Stark revealed the development at the Financial Times Crypto and Digital Assets Summit held this week. "We've released an early part of the code in October, and actually just on this past Thursday, demoed the first-ever transaction on Lightning of an asset," she said.

The Taproot Assets protocol aims to facilitate the creation of crypto dollars and stablecoins on the Bitcoin blockchain. Stark emphasized the importance of addressing real-world problems and practical use cases, rather than solely focusing on speculative or meme-based cryptocurrencies.

"I really care deeply about solving real problems for real people, as opposed to meme coins or gambling," Stark said. "The ability to position stablecoins and other assets atop Bitcoin will facilitate new use cases and bring more people on to the internet of money and digital assets."

Stark noted a recent surge in developer interest in Bitcoin following the halving event. "Many builders are coming back" to the blockchain, she said. This growing developer ecosystem is evident in the emergence of decentralized finance (DeFi) projects on Bitcoin, such as bitVM, which enables developers to create Turing-complete Bitcoin contracts.

Eliminating Cross-Border Barriers

Lightning Labs' technology aims to eliminate the concept of cross-border transactions and enable seamless global value transfer.

"The concept of a cross-border payment is something that we hear about a lot," said Stark. "Why should we even call it ‘cross border’ anymore? We don't have cross-border emails, we don't have cross-border text messages. I don't have to pay any fees to send an image to a friend across the world—value on the internet, and money, should function the same."

Stark cited a recent IMF report that highlighted the increasing significance of Bitcoin in facilitating remittances and evading capital controls in emerging markets. "That finding was not at all surprising to those of us who are on the ground who are working with developers and communities in these places," she said. "In markets subject to hyperinflation and authoritarian regimes, Bitcoin becomes an asset and a means of transacting when they don't have other options."

The Taproot Assets protocol, combined with the capabilities of the Lightning Network, represents a significant advancement in the Bitcoin ecosystem. It has the potential to expand Bitcoin's utility as a global value transfer network, particularly in regions where financial access and stability are limited.
