In a significant development for the Bitcoin ecosystem, Lightning Labs, the company behind the Lightning Network, has successfully tested a protocol that enables the issuance of stablecoins on the Bitcoin blockchain.

This growing developer ecosystem is evident in the emergence of decentralized finance (DeFi) projects on Bitcoin, such as bitVM, which enables developers to create Turing-complete Bitcoin contracts.

"The concept of a cross-border payment is something that we hear about a lot," said Stark. "Why should we even call it ‘cross border’ anymore? We don't have cross-border emails, we don't have cross-border text messages. "That finding was not at all surprising to those of us who are on the ground who are working with developers and communities in these places," she said. "In markets subject to hyperinflation and authoritarian regimes, Bitcoin becomes an asset and a means of transacting when they don't have other options."
