LayerZero Announces Airdrop for Loyal Supporters

May 02, 2024 at 04:38 pm

LayerZero, a cross-chain interoperability protocol, anticipates launching a much-awaited airdrop for users. Following the initial snapshot on May 2, LayerZero Labs promised further details shortly. Airdrops, popular among DeFi protocols, reward early adopters with new cryptocurrencies, aiming to boost platform usage. LayerZero's token launch, initially scheduled for early 2024, remains pending, with no additional information provided.

LayerZero Announces Upcoming Airdrop for Committed Supporters

May 2, 2024 – San Francisco, California – LayerZero, a trailblazing cross-chain interoperability protocol, has officially initiated the first snapshot for its eagerly anticipated airdrop campaign. This pivotal move sets the stage for rewarding loyal users and further propelling the adoption of LayerZero's innovative technology.

The announcement was made through an X post by LayerZero Labs, promising followers a forthcoming release of comprehensive details. Airdrops have become a prevalent strategy in the decentralized finance (DeFi) landscape, effectively generating traction by distributing newly minted cryptocurrencies to early adopters.

LayerZero's native token, ZRO, holds the distinction of being the inaugural Hyperp (Hyperliquid-only perp) to debut on the HyperLiquid perpetual futures decentralized exchange (DEX) in September 2023. According to Xulian, Hyperiquid's pseudonymous core contributor, the current market price of ZRO Hyperp at $8.3 implies a potential fully diluted valuation (FDV) of approximately $17 billion.

Hyperps closely resemble perpetual futures contracts, yet they eliminate the dependency on an underlying spot or index oracle price. Hyperliquid stands as the world's foremost perpetual futures DEX, commanding both trading volume and Open Interest.

Strategic Token Distribution in Early 2024

Although LayerZero Labs has refrained from divulging further specifics regarding the airdrop, the company has previously hinted at plans for a token launch within the first half of 2024. This disclosure was made in a separate X post dated December 7, 2023.

"LayerZero's architecture has inherently accommodated the potential for a native token within the protocol, as evidenced by the immutable code deployed on day 1... We firmly assert that a LayerZero token will materialize. Its distribution is paramount, and we anticipate its occurrence within the first half of 2024."

Assessing the Impact of Airdrops on DeFi Protocols

While airdrops aim to foster protocol utilization by incentivizing early participation, it is crucial to acknowledge that users may not always secure the most significant rewards. Crypto airdrops often attract professional airdrop hunters, also known as squatters, who strategically employ multiple cryptocurrency wallets to claim rewards from numerous airdrops. These individuals have no long-term commitment to the protocols and typically opt to sell their rewards promptly.

In February 2024, Banteg, an anonymous developer for Yearn.finance, raised concerns that Starknet's airdrop eligibility list was heavily skewed towards airdrop squatters. An estimated 701,544 out of the 1.3 million eligible wallet addresses were allegedly linked to duplicate or renamed GitHub accounts under the control of airdrop squatters.

Chinese authorities apprehended an individual on May 1, 2024, for forging identities to claim StarkNet airdrops. The accused had impersonated other users to claim over 40,000 STRK tokens, subsequently converting them into approximately $91,000 worth of Tether (USDT).

In March 2023, it was discovered that airdrop hunters had consolidated $3.3 million worth of tokens from the Arbitrum (ARB) airdrop, originally distributed across 1,496 wallets, into just two wallets under their command.

The sale of tokens acquired through airdrops often coincides with their receipt, leading to an abrupt decline in the value of the newly distributed token. This phenomenon has been observed in multiple instances, including the Solana ecosystem.

The complexities surrounding airdrops necessitate a balanced approach that considers both their potential benefits and risks. As the DeFi space continues to evolve, the industry seeks strategies to effectively distribute tokens while minimizing the influence of airdrop squatters.
