JD Vance: The Pro-Crypto Running Mate Who Could Shake Up the Tech Sector

Jul 17, 2024 at 09:08 pm

Much is known about JD Vance, Donald Trump's running mate, not least his past criticism of the Republican presidential candidate, his tough working class upbringing and his time in the US Marine Corps.

JD Vance: The Pro-Crypto Running Mate Who Could Shake Up the Tech Sector

JD Vance, Donald Trump’s running mate, is a strong advocate of cryptocurrency and has expressed support for the US crypto industry. In an interview with Bloomberg Businessweek, Trump stated his intention to support the US crypto industry if elected.

Both Trump and Vance have highlighted the role of crypto assets in providing an alternative to government overreach and excessive regulation. Earlier this year, Vance joined other Republican senators in writing to Securities & Exchange Commission (SEC) chair Gary Gensler to express concerns over an enforcement action against crypto miner Debt Box.

Vance has also voted to reverse accounting guidelines introduced by the SEC that require publicly traded banks to place digital assets that they hold in custody on their balance sheets. This rule change, which was subsequently vetoed by President Biden, aimed to increase the cost of banks taking custody of crypto assets and potentially deter them from doing so.

Overall, Vance's pro-crypto stance and experience in venture capital could significantly influence the Trump administration's approach to digital assets and technology if elected.
