The Intriguing Reason Why UK Coins Have Grooved Edges

The crafting of UK coins is a process that encompasses everything from hue to silhouette. But have you ever paused to ponder the purpose behind the grooved edges on your loose change?

A TikTok enthusiast has shed light on this cunning design aspect. User @CoinCollectingWizard, who boasts 191,000 fans, shared the secret in a clip which garnered heaps of likes and comments.

He asserted that historical coins were comprised of gold or silver and lacked ridged edges. The worth of each coin was directly related to its gold or silver content.

However, some individuals saw an opportunity to profit underhandedly from these coins, he revealed. "They filed off the edges and sold them for their value in gold or silver," the user shared.

Oftentimes, the minor reduction in size went undetected, but such acts diminished the value of the original precious coin. To counteract this scam, the state started to mill or engrave the coins.

While modern-day coins are not struck from solid gold or silver, the tradition of milled edges persists.

He elaborated: "This means back then people could just make the coin smaller, keep the gold they took off the coin, and still use the coin as usual, so they put grooves on it. So it would be a lot harder to do that. Now it's just tradition."
