Institutional Investors Flock to Crypto Assets, Study Finds
May 04, 2024 at 12:00 am
Institutional investors are increasingly embracing crypto assets, with 74% of respondents expressing interest in investing in digital assets, a slight increase from 71% the previous year. US high-net-worth investors have shown a particularly significant rise in their preference for crypto assets, with future interest surging from 31% to 74% year over year.

Institutional Investors Swarm to Crypto Assets, Survey Reveals
New York City, August 23, 2023 - Institutional investors, including US pension plans, are embracing crypto assets, such as Bitcoin, with increasing enthusiasm, according to a comprehensive survey conducted by Fidelity Digital Assets.
The survey, which polled a diverse spectrum of institutional investor segments, including financial advisors, family offices, hedge funds, endowments, foundations, and pension funds, paints a vivid picture of the burgeoning adoption of cryptocurrencies within the institutional investment landscape.
Institutional Investors Lead Crypto Charge
A staggering 74% of survey respondents indicated their intention to invest in digital assets in the future, marking a modest increase from 71% recorded in the previous year. Notably, US high-net-worth investors exhibited a pronounced surge in their affinity for crypto assets, with their future investment interest skyrocketing from 31% to 74% year over year.
Challenges and Concerns
Despite the overall positive sentiment, the survey also unveiled the concerns and obstacles faced by institutional investors venturing into the crypto arena. Price volatility emerged as the primary deterrent, with 50% of respondents citing it as their foremost concern.
Other key apprehensions included the perceived lack of fundamental metrics for appropriate valuation (37%), security vulnerabilities (35%), potential market manipulation (35%), and regulatory uncertainties regarding the classification of certain coins as "unregistered securities" (33%).
Shifting Perceptions
The survey highlighted a significant shift in perception among institutional investors. Respondents in the US and Europe reported heightened familiarity, improved perception, and increased investments in crypto assets. Europe has narrowed the gap with Asia in terms of overall adoption and positive perception, while the US remains comparatively behind.
High-net-worth investors, crypto hedge funds/venture capital firms, and financial advisors exhibited the highest adoption rates and consideration of digital assets. This elevated adoption may be attributed to the organizational structures and investment decision-making processes of these groups. Conversely, family offices, pensions/defined benefit plans, traditional hedge funds, endowments, and foundations displayed lower levels of adoption.
Appeal of Crypto Assets
The survey also explored the specific features of digital assets that resonate most strongly with institutional investors. The potential for substantial returns, opportunities for innovative technology investments, and the empowerment of decentralization were cited as the most attractive qualities.
Additionally, participation in decentralized finance (DeFi) and yield opportunities gained increased attention compared to the previous year, while concerns about the lack of correlation with traditional assets diminished.
ETF Appeal
Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) and multi-digital asset funds, both actively and passively managed, emerged as the most appealing products among surveyed investors. European respondents also expressed interest in digital asset interest accrual offerings.
Market Resilience
Fidelity Digital Assets, the research firm behind the survey, commented on the significance of the findings:
"The increased adoption reflected in the data speaks to a robust first half of the year for the digital assets industry. While the markets have encountered numerous headwinds in recent months, we believe that digital asset fundamentals remain strong. The institutionalization of the market over the past several years has positioned it to navigate recent events. Institutional investors are adept at managing through cycles, and the underlying factors that they cited as compelling in this study are likely to persist as the market emerges from this period."
Crypto's Comeback
After a steep decline of almost 20% from its all-time high of $73,700 on March 14 to $56,000 on Wednesday, Bitcoin has regained the $60,500 threshold, signaling a potential market recovery.
