Friend.Tech's Native Token Plummets to $2.5 After Airdrop, Platform Upgrade
May 03, 2024 at 05:07 pm
Decentralized social platform Friend.Tech airdropped its native token, FRIEND, alongside the debut of its upgraded platform, version 2. Despite an initial surge to $169 post-airdrop, the token's value plummeted to $2.5, attributed to liquidity issues. Concerns have emerged regarding difficulties in claiming airdrops and a reportedly concentrated distribution favor

Native Token of Decentralized Social Platform Friend.Tech Plummets to $2.5 After Airdrop and Platform Upgrade
New York, May 3, 2024 - Friend.Tech, a decentralized social platform, has witnessed a precipitous decline in the value of its native token, FRIEND, following its airdrop and the simultaneous debut of version 2 of the platform.
The FRIEND token's price surged to as high as $169 immediately after it began trading on Base, an Ethereum-based layer-2 blockchain, but swiftly collapsed to a mere $2.5, according to data compiled by DEXscreener.
Analysts attribute the price plunge to liquidity constraints, a phenomenon similar to that experienced by the Renzo token last week. Liquidity refers to the market's capacity to accommodate large buy and sell orders without significant price fluctuations. In conditions of low liquidity, a few large orders can exert an outsized influence on market prices.
Friend.Tech, which launched in August 2023 as an invite-only platform on Base, has introduced a plethora of new features with its version 2 upgrade, including the Money Club, an exclusive space for financial discussions and networking.
At the time of writing, $29.8 million worth of crypto assets were locked in Friend.Tech, a decline of over 40% from the peak of $52.04 million achieved in early October, as per data from DeFiLlama.
The platform had been anticipating the version 2 launch and the FRIEND token airdrop, with activity increasing significantly in the preceding month. Last week, the platform took a snapshot for the highly anticipated 100% airdrop of FRIEND.
However, numerous users have reportedly encountered difficulties in claiming their airdropped tokens. "I'm not selling my FRIEND airdrop (because I can't even claim it)," stated Reetika Malik, a Dubai-based crypto analyst and trader, on X.
Hitesh Malviya, founder of crypto analytics platform DYOR, has described the distribution as a "concentrated airdrop," with leading creators receiving the bulk of the supply.
"Most users got 10x less airdrop than what they were expecting, so they are not even claiming that airdrop, as it's less than $200 for most of the retail investors," Malviya elaborated in a direct message to CoinDesk via X. "But at the same time, a few people ended up making a crazy amount. So it's a clear case of a very concentrated airdrop where leading creators took the most supply home through airdrop, leaving retail in the lurch."
Friend.Tech has yet to provide a response to requests for clarification as of the time of publication.
