Despite the highly-anticipated US Federal Reserve's announcement of unchanged interest rates at 5.25%-5.50%, Bitcoin (BTC) continues to experience a downward trend. The lack of interest rate reprieve, coupled with persistent inflation concerns, has further dampened sentiment around Bitcoin, resulting in a 0.25% recovery in the past 24 hours and an 8% decline over the past week.

Federal Reserve Maintains Interest Rates, Exacerbating Bitcoin's Downward Spiral
On Tuesday, the United States Federal Reserve announced its decision to hold interest rates steady within the 5.25%-5.50% range, a widely anticipated move given the recent inflation data and statements from Central Bank Chair Jerome Powell.
The decision comes amidst concerns over rising inflation, with the Consumer Price Index (CPI) report for March indicating a 3.8% increase in core inflation and a 3.5% increase in headline inflation, significantly higher than previous figures.
Powell has repeatedly emphasized that interest rate cuts will only be considered if there is "greater confidence that inflation is moving sustainably toward 2%." As the most recent data suggests otherwise, the Fed has opted to maintain the status quo for the time being.
However, the central bank has indicated its willingness to "carefully assess incoming data and the evolving outlook" before making any adjustments to the rate parameters. Some analysts speculate that the approaching US Presidential election could prompt the government to consider rate cuts as a means of appeasing voters and businesses.
Bitcoin's Continued Decline
Since the halving event, Bitcoin's value has been on a downward trajectory, dragging the entire cryptocurrency market down with it. The slump has been evident in the US spot Bitcoin exchange-traded fund (ETF) market, where outflows have overshadowed inflows, breaking BlackRock's streak of positive inflows. The lackluster performance of newly launched spot Bitcoin and Ethereum (ETH) ETFs in Hong Kong has also been attributed to the declining prices.
As of Wednesday, 11:00 AM UTC, Bitcoin is trading at $57,800, showing a slight 0.25% recovery over the past 24 hours. Despite the modest gain, the cryptocurrency remains approximately 8% and 12% below its seven-day and one-month values, respectively.
Grayscale Investments Head of Research Zach Pandl believes that the current interest rate environment has favored the US dollar and negatively impacted Bitcoin. However, he suggests that sentiment could shift towards Bitcoin if optimism surrounding interest rate cuts gains momentum.
Contrarian Viewpoints
SchiffGold CEO Peter Schiff, known for his skepticism towards Bitcoin, has seized the opportunity to criticize the cryptocurrency. In his view, Bitcoin's decline signals the end of its bull run, emphasizing its 23% decrease in dollar value and 33% decrease when measured against gold, with one Bitcoin now worth less than 25 ounces. Schiff's analysis suggests a bearish shift in market sentiment towards Bitcoin.
Despite the hype surrounding Bitcoin ETFs, the cryptocurrency's price action indicates a clear bear market. The decline raises concerns about its future trajectory and能否 recover from its recent losses.
