Ethereum Layer-1 Revenue Plummets 99% Since March 2024, But Layer-2 Solutions Are Thriving

Ethereum Layer-1 Revenue Plummets 99% Since March 2024, But Layer-2 Solutions Are Thriving

The Ethereum layer-1 network has seen a drastic change in its revenue, with a massive 99% plunge since March 2024. This shift comes following the Dencun upgrade, which has significantly altered the fee structure for transactions on the network.

While the layer-1 revenue has tanked, layer-2 solutions are thriving, attracting more users with lower fees, according to data from Token Terminal. This situation has sparked a mix of concerns and optimism within the Ethereum community.

The Dencun upgrade, which went live on March 13, further optimized the efficiency of layer-2 transactions. Just days before the upgrade, Ethereum's layer-1 revenue topped out at over $35 million. However, once the upgrade took hold, fees began to sharply decline, finally landing at close to $600,000 by the end of August.

This change highlights an altered behavior in how users interact with the Ethereum ecosystem. Transactions have become much cheaper with the introduction of “blobs,” which enable layer-2 solutions to process transactions with less reliance on the layer-1 network for data availability.

As a result, Ethereum's base layer revenue has fallen off a cliff. While this may sound alarming, it also indicates the increasing adoption of layer-2 solutions. The number of active layer-2 projects has also seen a rise, with a total of 74 solutions vying for space. This, in turn, is leading to a race to the bottom in transaction fee prices, ultimately benefiting users with substantial savings on faster transactions.

Despite the drastic revenue crash, some Ethereum validators, such as Ryan Berckmans, argue that the focus on fees is misplaced. According to him, the success of layer-2 solutions has made Ethereum's base layer more accessible to larger entities, stating that “fees are a result of Ethereum being useful, not the goal in itself.”

However, the community remains divided on this issue, with some highlighting potential long-term consequences of falling revenues on the network's health and tokenomics. The reduced burn rate of ETH tokens has flipped the previously deflationary supply into an inflationary one. This raises questions about the future value of ETH and whether changes in blob fees may be necessary to rebalance it.

Amidst these changes, institutional interest in Ethereum is also growing, with companies like Coinbase, Circle, and BlackRock offering support. This development is being highlighted by some, such as Ethereum believer Adriano Feria, who points out that the network is seeing support from大な institutions.

According to Feria, the institutional adoption of Ethereum is a key factor in the network's future prospects. He states that while speculation can briefly pique interest in a project, the entry of established players marks true progress in the industry.

Feria also believes that layer-2 scaling solutions are not a passing trend but instead open up new possibilities and enhance the user experience. He highlights how giant players like Coinbase's Base and Arbitrum are using Ethereum's leading liquidity to demonstrate that layer-2 scaling solutions can not only coexist with the base layer but also thrive on it.

The increasing utilization of layer-2 solutions is impacting Ethereum's layer-1 revenue, but it also marks a new chapter for the network, especially with the recent Dencun upgrade, which is making transactions cheaper and more accessible. This, coupled with the interest from institutions and the massive volume being churned out by users on these layer-2 solutions, might just be the beginning of Ethereum's evolution.
