Ethereum (ETH) Staking Inflows Soar Despite Correlation to Price Drops
Aug 17, 2024 at 04:00 am
Ethereum [ETH], being the second-largest crypto by market cap, has continued to follow Bitcoin [BTC] closely in its struggles to achieve new highs.

Ethereum’s price has seen a marginal decline in the past week, following the broader market trend. According to data from CoinMarketCap, ETH dropped by 2.1% over the last seven days.
At press time, the second-largest crypto was changing hands at a price of $2,620. This decline also extended to the past 24 hours, with the asset registering a drop of 0.2%.
In the last seven days, Ethereum’s price dropped to a low of $2,560 before recovering slightly. This price performance comes as the asset attempts to regain the crucial level of $2,700.
Ethereum staking inflows soar, presenting a unique correlation
An analysis of on-chain data highlighted a rising level of interest in staking Ethereum. This was evident in the latest update from CryptoQuant, which showcased a substantial increase in ETH stakings.
According to the analysis, a total of 16,280 ETH was staked over the last seven days. This brought the total staked ETH to 14,210,104.
However, an interesting correlation was also brought to light by the CryptoQuant analyst. The analysis showed that large influxes of ETH into staking often preceded noticeable declines in the asset’s market price.
As highlighted by the analyst, historical data from mid-July and mid-August showed that significant increases in staked ETH preceded periods where the asset’s price dropped substantially.
Hence, the analysis suggested that while staking was crucial for strengthening network security and stakeholder commitment, it also introduced an element of short-term price volatility due to the locking up of liquidity.
Ethereum’s price: A glance at the technical indicators
At press time, ETH was trading below the 50 Moving Average (MA) on the 4-hour chart, indicating a possible downtrend in the short term.
The asset’s Relative Strength Index (RSI) stood at 46.14, suggesting a neutral market momentum.
Bollinger Bands were converging, indicating a period of low volatility. However, the upper Bollinger Band was at $2,646, presenting a potential resistance level.
On the other hand, the lower Bollinger Band was at $2,593, offering a possible support level for ETH’s price.
Overall, technical indicators were mixed for ETH, suggesting a period of consolidation and potential for either a breakout or a further downturn.
Some analysts remained optimistic about Ethereum’s potential for recovery and growth. A prominent crypto analyst, known on X (formerly Twitter) as “Titan of Crypto,” projected a target price of $3,000 for Ethereum.
This prediction was partly based on the presence of an unfilled CME futures gap, which historically indicated a potential upward movement in price.
Moreover, Ethereum’s fundamental indicators, such as the estimated leverage ratio — at 0.328 at press time according to data from CryptoQuant — suggested a conservative yet stable market leverage situation.
This ratio, when evaluated alongside the current decline in Ethereum’s Open Interest from Coinglass, hinted at a cautious market sentiment.
However, it also highlighted the room for bullish momentum should market conditions improve.
