EigenLayer Distributes EIGEN Tokens, but Trading Stays on Hold
May 11, 2024 at 02:56 am
Blockchain startup EigenLayer has finally distributed its EIGEN tokens to users, but the tokens are currently non-transferable. The Eigen Foundation, a non-profit managing the token distribution, has not announced when the tokens will become transferable. Despite the lack of trading, speculators on decentralized exchanges are already valuing EIGEN at around $9 per token, suggesting a potential total value of $15 billion once they become tradable.

EigenLayer's EIGEN Tokens Finally Distributed, but Trading Remains Suspended
San Francisco, May 10, 2024 - After much anticipation, blockchain startup EigenLayer has commenced the distribution of its native EIGEN tokens to registered users. However, the tokens are currently non-transferable, meaning users cannot trade or sell them.
The Eigen Foundation, a non-profit organization responsible for managing the token distribution, has not yet disclosed a specific timeline for when the tokens will become tradable. This news has sparked both excitement and speculation within the crypto community.
Despite the lack of immediate trading, decentralized exchanges have already begun valuing EIGEN at approximately $9 per token. This speculative valuation suggests a potential total value of $15 billion for all EIGEN tokens once they become tradable.
"This valuation can be seen as a market expectation of the future spot price when the tokens become transferable," explained Julian Koh, CEO of Aevo, in a Telegram message. "People are using it as a reference point, similar to how prediction markets are used to gauge the likelihood of events."
EigenLayer garnered significant attention prior to its launch, largely due to its association with prominent venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz and the substantial user deposits it attracted. However, the token distribution plan has faced some criticism.
Certain users have expressed discontent with the non-transferability period and the exclusion of users from specific regions. Additionally, points earned through third-party services are not being considered for the current airdrop.
In response to community feedback, EigenLayer has partially addressed these concerns by allocating additional tokens to some users.
The delay in enabling token trading has raised questions about EigenLayer's long-term strategy. Some analysts speculate that the company is attempting to build anticipation and hype around the tokens before releasing them into the market.
Others believe that the non-transferability period is necessary to prevent early speculators from manipulating the price. EigenLayer has not publicly commented on the reasons behind the trading suspension.
As the crypto market continues to evolve, the future of EigenLayer and its EIGEN tokens remains uncertain. The company's next steps and the eventual release of transferable tokens will be closely watched by investors and market participants alike.
