Cypher Protocol Developer's Gambling Addiction Raises Alarm in Crypto Industry
May 15, 2024 at 05:01 pm
Pseudonymous Cypher Protocol developer Hoak has admitted to stealing nearly $300,000 worth of user funds and gambling them away. Hoak's confession follows a post revealing the absence of funds and an investigation by a pseudonymous core contributor Cobra, who traced the stolen funds to the Binance exchange. The insider's actions dealt Cypher Protocol another significant blow after a 2023 hack, raising concerns about gambling addiction in the cryptocurrency space.

Cypher Protocol Developer's Confession Raises Alarm About Gambling Addiction in Crypto Space
In a shocking turn of events, Hoak, the pseudonymous core developer behind the Solana-based decentralized exchange (DEX) Cypher Protocol, has admitted to absconding with nearly $300,000 in user funds and squandering them on gambling.
Hoak's confession, shared via a public statement on May 14, confirmed the allegations that had been circulating within the crypto community: "I took the funds and gambled them away. I didn't run away with it, nor did anyone else."
The revelation followed a May 13 post by another pseudonymous core contributor, Cobra, who revealed the missing funds. Discord group members had initially reported issues with fund withdrawals, prompting Cobra's investigation.
Cobra's research revealed a series of suspicious transactions: "Hoak withdrew funds from the Cypher redemption contract via 36 withdrawals... Funds were then swapped and sent to an intermediary wallet, which subsequently transferred them to Binance."
On-chain data compiled by Cobra traced a total of $317,000 in Solana (SOL), Tether (USDT), and USD Coin (USDC) from Hoak's wallet to the Binance exchange.
Hoak's confession sheds light on a disturbing trend emerging in the crypto space: gambling addiction. Hoak himself admitted to the debilitating nature of his gambling compulsion, stating that it had spiraled into "a crippling addiction."
While Hoak acknowledged the inexcusable nature of his actions, he lamented the lack of checks and balances that allowed his addiction to go unchecked: "This is the culmination of what snowballed into a crippling gambling addiction and probably multiple other psychological factors that went by unchecked for too long."
The Cypher Protocol incident has dealt a further blow to the embattled DEX, which had previously been hacked in August 2023, resulting in losses of over $1 million.
Hoak's confession has raised concerns among regulators and industry experts about the prevalence of gambling addiction within the crypto space. The impulsive and volatile nature of crypto trading has been likened to gambling by many, including the Chair of the United States Securities and Exchange Commission, Gary Gensler.
A 2023 YouGov survey revealed that individuals who engage in harmful levels of gambling are five times more likely to invest in cryptocurrencies, highlighting the potential for adverse impacts on this vulnerable group.
The Cypher Protocol incident serves as a stark reminder of the need for robust regulations, responsible gambling practices, and support systems to address the growing issue of gambling addiction in the crypto space.
