CryptoPunks Rule: Alien Punk Shatters Record, Sells for $12.38 Million
Apr 25, 2024 at 03:56 pm
A CryptoPunk Alien Punk, #635, sold for $12.38 million in Ethereum, making it the third most expensive CryptoPunk sale in history. This follows the sale of two other Alien Punks for record-breaking amounts in March, indicating a resurgence of interest in the sought-after NFT collection.

CryptoPunks Reign Supreme: Alien Punk Fetches $12.38 Million in Record-Shattering Sale
The digital art and collectibles market has witnessed another seismic transaction, as a highly sought-after CryptoPunk has commanded an astonishing $12.38 million in Ethereum.
On Thursday, Punk #635, one of only nine ultra-rare Alien Punks in the iconic 10,000-piece Ethereum NFT collection, was sold for a staggering 4,000 ETH. The sale, brokered by leading crypto art brokerage Fountain, saw the enigmatic piece acquired by an anonymous collector whose identity remains a closely guarded secret.
This remarkable trade follows hot on the heels of two other Alien Punks fetching near-record prices. In early March, Punk #3100 was purchased by an unknown crypto trader for $16.03 million worth of ETH, marking the second-largest on-chain CryptoPunk transaction ever recorded. Weeks later, Punk #7804, another Alien, was sold for $16.42 million in ETH, securing its place as the second-most expensive Punk sale in history.
The largest CryptoPunks sale of all time occurred during the NFT boom of early 2022, when a crypto startup CEO acquired Alien Punk #5822 for a breathtaking 8,000 ETH, valued at over $23.7 million at the time.
While these eye-popping Punk transactions rank among the most expensive NFT sales ever, they still fall short of the all-time reigning champion: "Everydays: The First 5,000 Days," an on-chain masterpiece by digital artist Mike "Beeple" Winkelmann. This seminal work fetched a staggering $69.3 million at a Christie's auction in early 2021.
The recent resurgence of astronomical price tags for CryptoPunk NFTs is a testament to their enduring appeal as rare cultural artifacts. Created in 2017, CryptoPunks were among the first NFT collections to gain widespread recognition and value.
In sharp contrast to the rising fortunes of CryptoPunks, other once-coveted profile picture (PFP) collections have struggled to regain their dominance since the collapse of the NFT market in mid-2022.
The Bored Ape Yacht Club, once a blue-chip NFT collection, has seen its assets' value plummet to a floor price hovering around $40,000, a staggering 90% decline from its peak in 2022, according to data from NFT Price Floor.
Other collections that previously defined the NFT landscape, such as Azuki and Doodles, have similarly experienced significant price floor declines, exceeding 50%.
The resilience of CryptoPunks in the face of the broader NFT market downturn highlights their enduring popularity and enduring value as digital collectibles. With their scarcity, cultural significance, and strong community following, it is no wonder that these iconic PFPs continue to command astronomical prices.
As the NFT market evolves, it remains to be seen whether CryptoPunks will continue to reign supreme in the digital art and collectibles space. However, their recent record-breaking sales serve as a powerful testament to their lasting appeal and enduring cultural impact.
