As cryptocurrency values surged in recent days, Google Trends data from April 13 to May 13 shows a spike in searches from the Philippines for the misspelled term "Etherium."

This analysis examines Google Trends data over the past month for Ethereum and its common misspelling, both labeled as "search terms" to ensure consistent results.

Interest in Ethereum

Ethereum has seen a resurgence in both market value and retail interest following the positive market movements, with its token, $ETH, surging more than 42% over the past week.

This outpaces the performance of other major tokens like $BTC (+8.2%) and $SOL (+23.2%), and has economists discussing the implications for broader market sentiment and liquidity flows.

Accordingly, Bitcoin influencer Kyle Chassé highlighted the increasing global search interest for the misspelled term "Etherium" on X.

In another post, a user also noted the rise in misspelled search queries as an indicator of the returning interest from retail traders.

However, not everyone agrees with this view; Coin Bureau co-founder Nic believes the recent rise in altcoin prices, including $ETH, is likely being driven by institutional investors or whales.

This reflects a broader shift in sentiment and growing anticipation of an altcoin season, which could be pushing crypto prices up in a broader correlation.

In addition, Nic suggests $ETH’s recent surge is likely due to a combination of factors, specifically the Pectra upgrade, a favorable macroeconomic environment encouraging risk-taking, and strong FOMO driven by whale activity, rumors, and a short squeeze.

"At the end of the day, it's hard to say. We know how these markets are. The oversold status suggested a recovery was on the cards. If I had to bet, I’d say ETH is still responding to broader liquidity inflows."

"Etherium" Search in PH

According to Google Trends data, Filipinos began searching for the misspelled term in late April.

According to Google Trends data, Filipinos began searching for the misspelled term in late April.

This search term aligns with the week leading up to the launch of the Pectra upgrade, a deployment on the major blockchain that aims to make Ethereum more user-friendly and secure.

It will enhance the network’s performance and scalability. It will also introduce new features like EIP-7702, which is designed to improve the efficiency of gas measurement for smart contracts.

The correct term "ethereum" had multiple spikes in interest during the 30-day period. The highest peak reached the maximum interest level of 100.

It is most searched in Cagayan Valley, Bicol, Eastern Visayas, Zamboanga Peninsula, and Northern Mindanao.

In contrast, "etherium" showed minimal engagement, with only a few isolated and minor spikes. It is most searched in the regions of SOCCSKSARGEN (Region XII), Ilocos Region (Region I), Central Visayas (Region VII), Central Luzon (Region III), and Western Visayas (Region VI).

For the past month, the average interest for the correct spelling is 45, while the misspelled term is seven.

What Could This Mean?

The rise in searches for the misspelled term "etherium" shows growing interest in Ethereum, especially from beginners who aren’t familiar with the correct spelling. This highlights the need for easier-to-understand educational content.

In the Philippines, there is a local community initiative called Ethereum Philippines, also known as ETH63, dedicated to promoting Ethereum awareness and adoption in the country. Their long-term goal is to foster a decentralized Ethereum community in the Philippines by providing a platform for education, collaboration, and advocacy.

However, the emergence of this misspelling, if left uncorrected, could lead web3 newcomers to lose their investments before they could actually start.

In 2024, web3 security firm Scam Sniffer cautioned that a simple typo—like entering "someium" instead of "Soneium," Sony’s Ethereum Layer-2 blockchain—on Google Search could trigger a sponsored phishing ad designed to drain crypto wallets.

What is Ethereum?

What is Ethereum?

Ethereum is a decentralized blockchain platform known for its cryptocurrency, $ETH, and its ability to power smart contracts and decentralized applications.

Launched in 2015 by Vitalik Buterin, Ethereum enables peer-to-peer interactions without intermediaries and serves as a key foundation for decentralized finance.

In 2022, it transitioned to a proof-of-stake system to enhance efficiency and sustainability.

Recent Ethereum Update

Last month, Buterin proposed replacing the Ethereum Virtual Machine with RISC-V, an open-standard instruction set, to significantly boost Layer 1 scalability.

Ethereum’s Pectra upgrade was deployed on May 7. It successfully lowered blob fees to their minimum levels, improving the cost-effectiveness of roll-ups and laying the groundwork for a better base-layer experience.
