Crypto Update: ATOM Struggles, SHIB Remains Volatile, ADA Disappoints

May 07, 2024 at 03:25 pm

Despite Bitcoin's dominance, some cryptocurrencies exhibit independent trends. Cosmos (ATOM) has experienced a 12% rise in the last week, yet remains 79% below its 2021 highs. Shiba Inu (SHIB) has lost 16% in the last month but maintains a 120% gain since January. Cardano (ADA) has underperformed, losing 24% year-to-date and 85% from its 2021 peak. Notably, ATOM's price has been influenced by Bitcoin's movements, while ADA's performance has been disappointing despite its top 10 ranking.

Crypto Update: ATOM Struggles, SHIB Remains Volatile, ADA Disappoints

ATOM: A Lackluster Performer in the Crypto Space

Despite the Cosmos ecosystem's aspiration towards independence, the price trend of its native cryptocurrency, ATOM, remains heavily influenced by the movements of Bitcoin (BTC) and Ethereum (ETH). In the past seven days, ATOM has experienced a 12% increase in its market value, outperforming ETH's -3% and BTC's +0.1%. However, this positive blip is overshadowed by a significant 18% decline in the last thirty days, mirroring the sharp drop in Bitcoin's price during the pre-halving retracement in mid-April.

ATOM's price recovery since then has been sluggish, oscillating between $7.7 and $9.1. Notably, its current value sits below the $10.6 mark at the beginning of the year, despite a brief surge to over $14 in mid-March. 2024 has proven to be a challenging year for ATOM so far, with its price still staggering at -79% below the highs of 2021. The current price even lags behind May 2023, highlighting the cryptocurrency's struggles in the past year.

ATOM's performance since August 2020, before the last major bull run, has been equally underwhelming. The price has hovered near that level, with a significant drop below it in October last year. It appears that the collapse of Earth/Moon in 2022 has erased the gains from the 2021 bull run, with ATOM's value yet to recover.

SHIB: A Memecoin's Volatile Existence

Shiba Inu (SHIB), a prominent memecoin, operates on a layer-2 of the Ethereum blockchain. While it is not a native cryptocurrency, SHIB has its own blockchain. The last few months have been unkind to SHIB, with a 1.5% loss in the past seven days and a 16% decline in the past thirty days. Despite these recent setbacks, the current price of 23 cents remains significantly higher than the 10 cents at the beginning of the year, resulting in a +120% gain year-to-date.

However, 2023 has been far from impressive for SHIB, with its price only rising from 8 to 10 thousandths of a dollar during the bull run in October. SHIB remains -73% below its 2021 highs and has experienced only one significant upward movement this year, a +260% surge in a week in early March.

As a memecoin, SHIB's price trend is characterized by erratic jumps, often followed by sharp declines. The emergence of other memecoins that have outperformed SHIB in recent times further complicates its price dynamics.

ADA: Cardano's Disappointing Display

ADA, the native cryptocurrency of the Cardano blockchain, has been a notable disappointment among the top 10 cryptocurrencies by market capitalization. In the last seven days, ADA has lost 1.5%, and in the last thirty days, it has declined by 24%. Most alarmingly, ADA has suffered a -24% loss since the beginning of the year, making it the worst-performing cryptocurrency among the top 15 in 2024.

Despite a promising start to 2024, with a rise from $0.6 to $0.77, ADA has plummeted to below $0.45 in recent weeks. The strong performance in the first two and a half months of the year has proven to be a mere mirage.

A wider view reveals a slightly more positive picture for ADA in 2023. It started the year at $0.24 and reached $0.6 by the end-of-year bull run. As such, 2023 has been a positive year for ADA, while 2024 has been disappointing.

Despite the ongoing bull run, ADA has failed to surpass its pre-Terra/Luna implosion price of $0.9. The current price remains -85% below the all-time highs of 2021. The fact that the bottom of the 2022 bear market was reached at the end of 2023 also casts doubt on ADA's medium- to long-term prospects.
