Which Crypto Is Better to Hold in 2025: SUI or Aptos (APT)?

Jan 29, 2025 at 12:30 am

Which Crypto Is Better to Hold in 2025: SUI or Aptos (APT)?

Promising blockchain platforms like SUI and Aptos have sparked interest among investors, given their potential for growth in the future. However, choosing between these two networks can be challenging, especially when both have strong chances of success.

To gain insights into this matter, let's examine how Lark Davis, a well-known crypto influencer, compares these two platforms on his YouTube channel.

Davis begins his analysis by highlighting the importance of portfolio diversification in the crypto space. He explains that a well-structured portfolio should span the entire risk spectrum, from established assets like Bitcoin to more speculative investments in AI tokens, meme coins, and NFTs.

The middle ground, he notes, includes active Layer 1 blockchains like Solana and community-driven projects like XRP and Cardano.

In this context, both SUI and Aptos fit into the category of promising Layer 1 blockchains with strong growth potential. So, which one could be better to hold in 2025? Let's delve deeper into their origins, technologies, and market performance to uncover some clues.

The Meta Connection: Origins of Aptos and Sui

The story of both Aptos and SUI begins at Meta (formerly Facebook), where their founders worked on the now-discontinued Diem project. Ching and Shaikh went on to launch Aptos in October 2022, presenting it as a high-speed, proof-of-stake blockchain designed for deploying smart contracts at scale.

Several months later, in May 2023, Mysten Labs introduced Sui to the market, aiming to establish it as a permissionless, high-throughput blockchain optimized for Web3 experiences. Both platforms chose to build using the Move programming language, a technology inherited from their Meta roots.

The Move programming language serves as a cornerstone for both SUI and Aptos, offering developers an accessible environment while enabling parallel execution for enhanced transaction throughput.

As Davis points out, both networks also leverage the Block-STM system, resulting in impressive transaction processing capabilities. In essence, these platforms are designed to handle a massive volume of transactions quickly and efficiently.

Market Position and Performance Metrics

Now, let's shift our attention to some key market performance metrics. According to Davis, SUI has taken a commanding lead in market capitalization, sitting at $14.8 billion as the 14th largest cryptocurrency, while Aptos holds the 34th position with a $5.3 billion market cap.

The difference in daily trading volume is equally striking, with SUI generating $1.7 billion compared to Aptos’s $334 million.

In terms of network activity, SUI has pulled ahead with 10-20 million daily transactions, while Aptos processes around 4 million – still significantly more than Ethereum.

However, Aptos leads in stablecoin integration with a market cap of $678 million, surpassing SUI's $441 million. Both platforms maintain robust development communities, with similar numbers of core developers and consistent commit activities.

Both networks have achieved significant milestones recently. Aptos has integrated native USDC support and secured a partnership with Stripe, while experiencing a leadership transition as Mo Shaikh stepped down as CEO, with Avery Ching taking the helm.

On the other hand, Sui has focused on gaming initiatives and enhanced security through a Chainalysis partnership.

Which Crypto Is Better to Hold?

In his concluding analysis, Davis makes an interesting observation. Despite SUI's current market dominance and stronger performance metrics, he personally holds only Aptos, viewing it as an undervalued opportunity.

He suggests that investors face a classic market dilemma: backing the current frontrunner in SUI or betting on Aptos's potential to close the gap.

The choice between these platforms ultimately depends on an investor's risk appetite and market thesis. While SUI currently leads in most metrics and continues to set new price records, Aptos's strong fundamentals and room for growth present a compelling alternative for those willing to take a contrarian position in the market.
