Crypto Group Considers Amicus Brief in Samourai Wallet Case
May 02, 2024 at 03:22 am
Coin Center, a non-profit crypto advocacy group, is considering filing an amicus brief in support of the co-founders of Samourai Wallet, who were recently arrested on charges related to operating an unlicensed money-transmitting business. The group's executive director has expressed concerns about the indictment, noting it includes "some questionable charges."

Crypto Advocacy Group Coin Center Considers Amicus Brief in Samourai Wallet Case
The Washington, D.C.-based nonprofit crypto advocacy group Coin Center is weighing its options regarding the filing of an amicus brief in support of the co-founders of the crypto mixer Samourai Wallet. This development comes following the recent arrest of Samourai Wallet co-founders Keonne Rodriguez and William Lonergan Hill by authorities.
Arrests and Allegations
On August 22, 2023, U.S. authorities apprehended Rodriguez and Hill on charges of operating an unlicensed money-transmitting business that allegedly facilitated over $2 billion in illicit transactions. The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) further alleges that Samourai laundered more than $100 million in criminal proceeds.
Coin Center's Response
Jerry Brito, executive director of Coin Center, expressed concerns about certain charges outlined in the indictment against the Samourai Wallet co-founders. Upon being asked on social media if Coin Center intended to submit an amicus brief in support of the mixer, Brito confirmed that the organization was considering the matter.
"The indictment was unsealed on Friday, so we need a little time to consider everything," Brito stated. "Who knows if this even goes to trial, etc. But yes, we filed in the Tornado Cash indictment and may well do so here too."
Understanding Amicus Briefs
An amicus brief is a legal document filed by a non-involved party in a court case. These briefs are authored by "friends of the court" and provide additional information or arguments that assist the court in reaching its decision.
Tornado Cash Precedent
Coin Center's potential filing in the Samourai Wallet case follows its involvement in the legal proceedings against Tornado Cash, an Ethereum-based coin mixing system. The U.S. sanctioned Tornado Cash in 2022, citing national security concerns.
One of Tornado Cash's founders, Roman Storm, was arrested last year and charged with allegedly laundering $1 billion in criminal proceeds, including funds associated with the sanctioned North Korean cybercriminal organization Lazarus Group.
Conclusion
Coin Center's consideration of an amicus brief in the Samourai Wallet case reflects the organization's commitment to advocating for the responsible development and use of cryptocurrencies. The outcome of the Samourai Wallet case and the potential involvement of Coin Center will be closely monitored by industry stakeholders as they have implications for the future of crypto mixers and financial privacy in the digital age.
